back to article Nothing to declare at border control except a Windows 7 certificate error

Today's bork - on a UK border control wait-time screen - is doubly unfortunate. Tired passengers get no clue how long until someone checks their passport, and of all organizations that should keep security certs current, the one responsible for keeping out criminals tops the list. Spotted by eagle-eyed Register reader Alan …

    Thumb Up

As it turned out, our reader reported that it took a mere 10 minutes to whizz through the border at Birmingham – very speedy when compared to certain other ports of entry.

That's why I prefer Birmingham Airport. Less crowded than the London ones and faster processing. You can park within five minutes walk of the terminal for a week for a reasonable fee. You can disembark the plane and be on the M42 in less than half an hour.

      Brum Airport

As well as getting onto the M42 easily, you can let the train take the strain (like a few others)

At least using the train saves the stupidly expensive drop off charges.

Except when I used to do it - Virgin was ridiculously expensive from London but Chiltern was ridiculously cheap - to Moor Street. Luckily a bus pass takes the strain out to Elmdon or whatever they call it nowadays. Stilll easier than getting to Heathrow.

Apparently my daily driver OS in 2026 has been powered off without me even realizing it.

    Not a good idea

Taking photos at border control? Not something I'd like to chance.

Yes, do that over the other side of the pond, they'll shoot first and ask[not answer] questions later

    Be Sensible

If a machine is not connected to the internet and has no Wi-Fi connection there are few security concerns. If it works well dont replace it. I have seen stand alone point of sale (POS) systems running Windows 7 and they work well. They were very expensive new and very expensive to replace. Even upgrading the OS would be pointless. Most of the POS peripherals dont even have drivers for W10.

I wouldn't rely on Windows timekeeping without an NTP connection.

Come on. It is a commercial airport. How accurate does its time need to be?

I recall flights where I didn't know what day we would get out. Or worse: we took off directly into a thunderstorm which followed us all the way.

Thus started many films on flights going wrong ….

And you've never heard of GPS or other local time sync methods.

You do realise it is actually possible to run internal NTP servers which sync to internet NTP servers without actually allowing a path between internal clients and the internet...

Source: I have implemented said NTP servers for various airports.

      Re: Be Sensible

Until recently my local Poundland (think Dollar store), now closed, had self-service tills (checkouts for any US readers) running Windows XP. Complete with Teletubby land ' Bliss' wallpaper when booting up!

And they only installed these self-service tills a few years ago!
