back to article Datacenters that don't have their own power supplies will fail

Availability of energy will determine the prices charged by datacenter operators, who won’t be viable unless they generate some of their own juice. So says Bob Johnson, a VP analyst at Gartner, which on Tuesday published research titled “Emerging Tech: Top Trends in Data Center Power Provisioning.” Johnson opens by suggesting …

    Well, this makes it official...

..Gartner is at least five years behind what the rest of us have been talking about for a decade or more.

So even when they're using hydrogen power, these planet-f***ing b^£$£"%^s can't just split it from water to do it cleanly and instead use natural gas, creating more pollution? We're all f"£"$$d.

"new clean technologies that are not currently commercially available"

    Unicorn farts?

No - unfortunately those release methane and are not considered "Green"

"that in 2036, 40 percent of all new data centers “will rely on power generated on-site by new clean technologies that are not currently commercially available.”"

Ahhh magical sky fairy thinking! Dont worry children, in the future we will have the technology to do everything we need. There wont be any problems whatsoever because the magical sky fairy will make sure everything runs perfectly...

Brought to you by the same sort of people that tell you "Dont worry about Global Warming! We'll soon have the technology to make it all better.". I.e Morons...

"Dont worry about Global Warming! We'll soon have the technology to make it all better.". I.e Morons...

Not really - the people that say that are generally:

      a) C-Suite execs and marketing people at tech companies and startups

      b) NGO's who's income relies on CO2-related fearmongering

These people aren't Morons, they are simply obfuscating reality in order to earn their next paycheck

The Morons are the ones who believe that politicians can change the weather if only you'll pay more tax and concede more freedom...

We need to get back to the real harms being done to the planet - reducing sky-high levels of pollution, consumption and waste, and trying to prevent continuing destruction of rainforests (including bizarrely to host the latest COP30) and other habitats both above and below the surface of the ocean

The constant babble about CO2 by all of the usual useful idiots (here's looking at you BBC and Mr Millibrain) just allows these real harms to be pushed out of sight by the people and corporations who continue to benefit by greenwashing their product marketing, while destroying the planet in far more substantive and immediate ways

Jonathan Brearley wants a gold toilet.

Yep. The Bbc and one of Milibrain's mates was in the news again. Not good news for consumers or industry, but about as expected for what's laughably called UK energy policy-

        https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp84yymxpjno

Energy regulator Ofgem has approved the funding in a five-year plan to improve electricity and gas grids. The money will go towards maintaining gas networks and strengthening the electricity transmission network.

The work is estimated to add £108 to energy bills by 2031.

But Ofgem said people would end up saving about £80 more than they otherwise would, as the investment will help lower the reliance on imported gas and make wholesale energy cheaper, leading to a net energy bill rise of about £30 a year.

Green economics at their finest. Or just regulatory capture. Wholesale gas prices have fallen to pre-2022 prices, retail prices obviously haven't. Milibrain and Brearley's mates in the 'renewables' lobby keep telling us their electricity is the cheapest evah, yet under Brearley's 'leadership', electricity costs have continued to rocket.. And now more costs are being imposed on cosumers, because why not? It's not like Ofgem is representing consumers interests. So we've got the highest electricity costs in the world, and Starmer thinks the UK is going to be an AI powerhouse.. Except we don't have the power, and bit-barn builders are being bribed to build here because given our energy costs, it's the only way to attract them.

And of course our budget has just made things worse with tobacco getting another RPI+ increase, which given CfDs and other aspects of energy 'policy' also get RPI+ increases means that faglflation will just futher inflate energy costs, along with inflation given energy costs are an input to everything. The self-inflating Green bubble continues to grow and consume all.. Except scum like Brearley, who'll probably get a pay rise because £300k is not enough to keep wrecking the UK economy.

    Gartner Goop

I'm astounded that anyone still thinks Gartner is an authority on anything.

The purpose of Gartner is to say "current trends will continue" so PHB's can CYA by saying "Gartner advised this."

No one ever got ahead by chasing future trends spotted by Gartner, because Gartner is completely blind to emerging technology.

    Stop

    Moar power

We already have an unlimited source of nuclear energy - accessing it is just a power distribution issue.

Stick your solar panels in the many parts of the world that have plenty of space for them, and pair them with LDES of various flavours. Fiery lithium keep well away from your data centre, or non-flammable alternatives like EOS' zinc batteries put wherever convenient.

It's not rocket science. And it has minimal dependence of regulators or pie-in-the-sky production advances compared to nuclear energy. And much cheaper.
