back to article FCC guts post-Salt Typhoon telco rules despite ongoing espionage risk

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has scrapped a set of telecom cybersecurity rules introduced after the Salt Typhoon espionage campaign, reversing course on measures designed to stop state-backed snoops from slipping back into America's networks. In a 2-1 vote last week, the agency revoked the January Declaratory …

    WTF?

    'Agile security'?

The FCC insists it's not stepping back from cybersecurity, just taking a more "agile" approach.

    God help us all.

WTF do these people think is going to happen, or are they just not thinking at all?

I spent over 20 years trying (and often failing but occasionally succeeding) to get customers to follow government security standards for their own good, but in order to get effective security you need a team of experts, such as are available to the US FCC, to state the rules, and have genuine penalties to make managers implement and enforce them.

    Clear out the Chinese

So agent Krasnov can set the table for his Russian masters.

That being said, the whole idea that pulling strong governance and oversight will improve the security of these carrier environments is about as wrongheaded as it can get. Then again, we have seen the brain trust hired by that administration. Should we be surprised?
