back to article Canada ups its European Space Agency bet 10x with $376M

Canada will boost its investment in European Space Agency (ESA) programs by CA$528.5 million ($376 million USD), a tenfold increase, according to the Canadian Space Agency. The jump has come in the face of the US tariffs and an urgent need to diversify the country's economy. Cozying up with the EU would also be no bad thing …

Certainly has nothing to do with any kind of revelations in the country where NASA is operating; or tries to operate all its valuable and often rightfully famous services with much less money and a not so foreseeable future ...!

SCNR! As a European I can only applaud to this ...! SCNR once again! ;-)

    PS:

"Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me!" And trying or just proclaiming to make "me" another state of Yours probably and rightfully so should count as fooling ...! And this is probably understated!

Drumpf utterly destroyed the relationship Canada had with the US. In case you hadn't noticed, our Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has signed off on several international deals to diversify our trade and defense portfolios.

Here's hoping we completely cancel the albatross F-35's with their obscene price tags and buy the Saab Grippen instead - they're willing to work with Canada to build up our own maintenance and repair facilities, and do a large part of the manufacturing here.

Drumpf's F-35 deal is all about the US raping anyone stupid enough to buy those pieces of shit.

Even before the rule of the Great Leader. The USA blocked the launch the Canadian Radarsat2 earth resources because it would allow those dangerously polite people to the North access to high quality surface data.

So it was launched from Russia (well presumably Kazakhstan by that point but still pretty non-US aligned)

The F35 was designed to tie other countries to the USA, while diminishing the aeronautical companies in those other countries. Stupid politicians went along with it.

If we had the F35 in Afghanistan we wouldn't have been beaten by Al Queda's airforce

    Canada is doing it

Because they know NASA is going to be shut down if Trump has his way. He wants a moon mission he can take credit for, but if that happened next week he'd be trying to close down NASA entirely the day after they got back home.

    Everything we do

To get further away from the USA is a good thing. They declared economic war on us. They threatened us with taking our land , by force if necessary , The f-35 program ? They keep the keys and we need their permission to use the planes. Every Canadian chooses produce and products made anywhere but the USA. It's a fact. This week the Kind of Sweden was on a visit. Ties grow with Europe on every level for they are more reliable partners. Contributing to the ESA and cutting back on NASA is ok in my book. Why should we as a country , fill American pockets ? Our attitude towards the USA and Europe has changed due to the actual US Government. These are all facts. Maybe in a few decades the relationship between us and the USA will be mended but this treachery will forever stay in our minds. For now we open up to the rest of the world. That is all good. We can thrive without the USA and they can go to hell with their internal problems , they did vote for this. Investing more in the ESA is the right idea and we, Quebecers , are encouraging the Canadian government to go with more Europe ties. Specially with Sweden and SAAB. We do hope for the best , and the best we do is in the aerospace industry. Full steam ahead.

      Re: Everything we do

      You're welcome! :-)

Though it's none of my real problems I'm still completely riddled as to why one (your southern neighbour) for no obvious reasons would like to step on the foot of its closest ally in such a way. I may be wrong as I obviously do not know everything about the history and politics of your two countries but at least to my knowledge the USA never had to support Canada in any kind of war but Canada more than once stepped in as a loyal ally in one of the several wars the USA had chosen to wage.

Would surely be interesting to see what might happen if the Yellowstone volcano REALLY came back to life again. At least to my knowledge, regarding the "usual / normal" 600000 years cycle, this beast seems to be more than overdue ...

Not true. You tariffed China for EVs, which benefited the USA but not Canada.

      >> We do hope for the best

Unfortunately, Carney is a hand wringer. Watch his speeches. He loves gesturing with his hands. He can't stop himself. Canada is trying to juggle China and the American regime, but decades of being close to the USA means it does not have the skill to do it.

Re: tariffed China for EVs, which benefited the USA but not Canada

A benefit for the USA auto industry is a benefit for the Canada auto industry. Well, less and less so, falling off a cliff now actually, but there are still hardly any vehicles produced in either country that don't at least contain a substantial number of parts produced in the other country.

In the future? Who knows, but highly unlikely Canada will keep 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to support USA companies if Detroit continues being forced to abandon Canada. China put tariffs on Canadian Canola in response, and that matters a lot.

Less a matter of skill and more a matter of an integrated industry with 350M rich consumers a short drive away vs a closed economy of relatively poor people an ocean away

    Don't count on it:

    >> One of its astronauts, Jeremy Hansen, will be launched on NASA's Artemis II mission around the Moon, and another, Joshua Kutryk, is set for the Starliner-1 mission

The petulant orange man may well cancel these two.
