back to article Get ready to squint! World's smallest pixel is just 300 nm

Micro-OLED displays with 1080p (1920x1080) resolution have been around for a few years now, but a group of German researchers has taken things to the next level. They've engineered an OLED pixel so small that an entire 1080p display could fit into a single square millimeter, potentially changing the game for wearable displays …

I foolishly looked this up on something called The Internet :

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_silsesquioxane

"Hydrogen silsesquioxane(s) (HSQ, H-SiOx, THn, H-resin) are inorganic compounds with the empirical formula [HSiO3/2]n. "

there is a nice image of the standard molecule.

I think it's considered immoral to utter that in mixed company.

    Eye of a Needle artwork

So does this make the guy producing those extreme miniature replicas of famous paintings (sunflowers, the scream, and others) redundant? Pop a little 1080p screen based on this tech in there and use a slideshow program?

So far it isn't a pixel, it's an orange sub-pixel - you need at least three colours for a colour display pixel.

It also appears to run too hot to have many close together - they were only testing one emitter.

So far, anyway. The manufacturing technique seems reasonable, so the next steps will be more colours and improved efficacy.

      Very exciting.

Who says it needs to be colour to be a pixel? Pixels - picture element - applies to monochromatic displays too. Some of the video terminals I used in university even had orange / amber displays.

So it can do cat pictures, but only of orange cars?

That;'s still at least 50% of the internet

    Picture this

In a few years it won’t be were are my glasses, it will be where is my monitor.

Mind you if they could get the processing small enough it might work for partially sighted people by being able to position an image where the retina is still working to allow them to see better.

Does the pave the way for an 87-inch screen with a resolution of 3,868,400 x 1,166,400, or 4.3 terapixels?

    Orange light!

So, we will have 1980's style amber monochrome wearable screens!

    How wonderful!

    On no!

Back to the opticians for some new specs.
