back to article FAA decides it trusts Boeing enough to certify the safety of its own planes again

After years of relying on the FAA to certify its jets as airworthy, Boeing is finally going to be allowed to do so itself – sometimes.  The US Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday that it was granting Boeing "limited delegation" to issue its own airworthiness certificates for the 737 Max and 787 aircraft, which it …

Er, before you can get to Space, you have to traverse the Air Space which in the US of A is the domain of the FAA

            Even in Texas / Florida?

Of course. Especially if you fly over the Gulf of America end the Eatern American Ocean.

Launching from Texas you are likely to spend a decent amount of time flying over the Gulf of America. However that could be avoided by flying over the Gulf of Mexico instead.

Goodness knows that we're *trying*, trying very very hard, to make those two clauses - USA and Texas / Florida - no longer have any form of association. We'd love to do a Bugs Bunny and simply cut those...recalcitrant...people's land mass off of the continent [hopefully to do an Atlantis-like trip afterwards), but like herpes they are a 'gift' that you simply can't get rid of.

Alternatively, a SpaceX vehicle plummets to earth like a boulder or anvil in Road Runner, with Musk or Trump as Wile E. Coyote trying to out run it...

    I doubt it will matter

Even if the US decides to let them self regulate, other bodies outside the US aren't likely to do so anytime soon. Though if Trump finds out about that he'll have another tariff tantrum I suppose.

Will China re-certify Boeing self-certified aircraft?

Cast your minds back. China grounded the 737 Max, just as the USA was saying "it is safe". The FAA resisted to the hilt, backing Boeing and its lack of safety culture. Cos it's American.

Why would China accept the word of Boeing? It lied end misled before, it can do it again. It could even be moot if China doesn't buy any more Boeings.

The NTSB (USA's accident investigation agency) was created because the FAA were in charge of promoting air travel and investigating accidents - leading to some "conflicts of interest"

Suppose the FAA are now in charge of promoting American aerospace companies AND regulating safety

That is one last hurdle for DOGE to shut down FAA.

The money save for not upgrading the outdated flight control systems could go and complete the fence.

    What could possibly go wrong?

    Bah!

    Because of course they are.

It is a foundational republican belief that self-regulation works well, and works best.

It is an evidential truth that this works just as well as that other republican foundational belief: trickle down economics.

Untill the next accident or near accident... When will they ever learn. Is NASA dosen't trust them, so neither should the FCC.

    If not the FAA...

If the FAA is going to hand off their duties to the companies they oversee, other countries are not going to accept FAA certifications on their face. It's better for Boeing in the long run to have the FAA doing the inspections so Boeing isn't being hit by requirements to submit to inspections for every country/region one of their aircraft fly to or over. Assuming that the FAA is doing a good job as they have done in the past.
