Keep any personal information stash on a computer that is not connected to the internet, or on paper. Retain the minimum necessary on an internet accessible system. Airgap your data stash from the net. Because it is the connection to the internet that makes your data inherently vulnerable.
This is obviously more complicated for larger, online trading companies, but they have IT folk. If you are a small business, choose the safer option.
The idea that sharing threats or keeping your free anti-virus or OS up to date will keep you safe, is untrue. Malware groups are simply more sophisticated than that.
And just because you can digitise everything, doesn't mean that you should. Many small businesses still use paper for day to day invoicing and the like. Schools can easily use an intranet that never connects to the public internet. Simpler, compartmentalised models offer greater safety.
We get this theatre of the govt. shutdown all the time. It is no way to run a government.
Get the point that the smaller businesses may not have an IT function to do all the 'Updating'.
BUT, doing all the 'right' things that you have enumerated is ALSO just as hard to do if you do not understand computers/internet/etc.
Surely having some protection by updating the things that you 'can control' makes sense ... it is not perfect but 'giving up' because it is not 100% effective works into the hands of the malware writers etc.
Keeping the OS and your anti-virus/anti-malware software up to date is minimising the size of the target the miscreants have to hit.
Of course, you need to maintain proper backups that are safely isolated from the internet, minimise the visibility of your data to the internet etc, and generally follow meaningful processes to protect your business data from harm ... but you have a duty to protect yourself as much as possible.
Advising people to just 'give up' because it is too hard does not make sense.
I protect my Servers, PCs and even my routers by implementing the best protections I can !!!
Is certain that it will be 100% effective always ... No
But I am making the effort needed by the miscreants greater and I will get some warning if they are not skilled enough to dodge the software/filters/etc, which will not be a trivial thing to do.
I would certainly NOT 'give up' !!!

Here new parties have a change, even though i don't like some of them. Which is healthier then that duo-pole, which is bound to keep the current system in place until it explodes. The question is not if, it is when. USoA is not known for peaceful solutions, those few peaceful ones were the exceptions from the rule...
There is the two-party system, which is a pretty good thing, and then there is the duopoly--which is a very, very bad thing. If I had to put a date to it, the end of Reconstruction is when we pretty much stepped into the duopoly. The challenges--mostly the Silver Party--went down hard.

That! Right there. That's the communistic thinking we have to stamp out. Now if you share 10% of your shares with the the federal govt, then it wouldn't be communism, because the govt are shareholders,, and it's right and proper that you share everything you know with other shareholders.
