back to article PC memory costs to climb as fabs chase filthy lucre in servers and HBM

PC memory prices are set to rise as the major suppliers allocate manufacturing capacity to the more lucrative server DRAM and HBM instead amid reports of tightening supplies. Memory prices are set for an increase in Q4 of 2025, according to market watcher TrendForce, which points the finger at the three top DRAM makers – …

    I've got some 4116 16k x 1 200ns DRAM chips, 7 of them. Am I going to become rich?

I remember driving halfway across the country in around '95 to buy some 4MB SIMMs - an absolute bargain at (IIRC) £75 each.

So yes, hang on to your DRAM chips. Consider taking them along to your next Antiques Roadshow to be appraised, even. They could be worth an absolute fortune!

I'd be more impressed if you had some 1103's...

Guess I bought at the right time

My old PC build died on me in early May so I built a new one. Was planning on 32 GB but I saw a sale at Amazon for 48 GB DDR5 for $90. Couldn't pass up $2/GB. Then I thought maybe I should take advantage of this time to upgrade my laptop, and snagged 32GB of DDR4 SO-DIMMs for $40, or $1.25/GB!

Not two weeks after I bought that laptop RAM I saw an article claiming that DDR4 production was being curtailed and prices are going up.

Well, good thing my freedom-respecting computers use DDR2 and DDR3 - that RAM is cheap and getting cheaper and on a clock-for-clock basis, seems to have a similar speed.
