back to article Space Command gets Trumped out of Colorado, voting conspiracy cited

The US President, Donald Trump, has announced his intention to relocate the US Space Command headquarters from its current location in Colorado to Huntsville, Alabama. Trump added that the city was "forever to be known from this point as Rocket City." He continued, "We love Alabama. I only won it by about 47 points," before …

On reflection, naming such a SIGNIFICANT agency after myself is EGOTISTICAL and MEGALOMANIACAL. A more APPROPRIATE name would be 'Vladimir Putin Space Command Centre'.

I guess if you don't get a porcelain throne in that little boys' room, having a Roger Ramjet style Space Command named after you is not so shitty a consolation.

This is superb news! President Trump rights two wrongs: The wrongness of the previous administration putting Star Fleet in Colorado. And punishing Colorado for letting non-Republicans vote!

It is fitting to see military installations named after people who covered themselves in valour when their country invited them to serve. Just wonderful.

    Buying votes ?

Is this not Trump buying votes using the government's cheque book ?

Mind you: this is something done by all politicians who can pull the stunt.

    1. John Gamble

      Re: Buying votes ?

Nah, Alabama is about as safe as is possible for a Republican congressional candidate. Alabama currently has 5 Republican and 2 Democrats in Congress. Huntsville is rep'd by Dale Strong, a Republican.

Midterm elections are coming up, that's what is at stake here.

He said it out loud: it's about a voting system that he can't easily (not impossible though) intimidate.

If he can find excuses to station his paramilitary at selected Colorado voting sites, that adds more pressure on the voters there that may not normally have voted in midterms. This applies to other states he has labeled corrupt.

Congress (both parties) is deeply disliked right now, with reason, and this is about giving candidates Trump likes an edge.

        Re: Buying votes ?

All the people who work there and have bought homes there will now have to sell their homes, drag their kids out of school and their partners will have to change jobs. They probably won't have finished doing that before those elections. I wonder if they will be voting for the orange turd?

Oh, and will Huntsville now have to officially change its name on all the maps?

It is actually a lot harder to buy votes than you might think. Recently, the Labour government here bent over backwards to save a steelworks, right down to authorising a not-very-climate-friendly emergency coal shipment. The mayoral election that followed was won by Reform. There's gratitude for you.

"and vote-by-mail is also under attack."

It's partly that and that Colorado and several other states send out mail-in ballots to all registered voters. That's whether they have requested one or not. It used to be that if you wanted an absentee ballot, you had to apply and have a good reason. I think voting is important so I get my backside to my polling place on election day. My mom worked as a nurse and wouldn't have her schedule soon enough to know if she could go or not (10-12hr shifts). She would get an absentee ballot. Her mom didn't get one and a good thing too. Gran was always two slices bread short of a sandwich.

        2. Ruisert

          Re: Buying votes ?

Colorado has been voting by mail for a long time now. It also has a very high voter turnout because of it. And it's generally known that higher turnouts usually skew elections toward Democrats. That in a nutshell is Donny 2 Dolls' reason for whining about mail-in voting, even though he usually votes by mail himself.

I beg your pardon. Polling locations are often set by available facilities and number of registered voters in the area. I have never in my life seen "limited" voting hours although I do think that having multiple days would be a good idea. Intimidating voters is a Federal offense with serious fines/prison time. There are also restrictions on "observers" and overt displays favoring any candidate, cause or party within a distance from a polling place. No signs are allowed promoting anything within a certain distance.

I've run out of ways to describe Trump. Even streaming together a very long list of derogatory words can not describe the depths of this man's bought and paid for soul. As they say the devil will properly fsck you with the details. It is extremely amusing to hear him talk about trying to get into heaven when that ship sailed into oblivion around 70 years ago. Being raised as a Lutheran, although that ship also sailed long ago, and having actually read the Bible (love the Old Testament, surprised it hasn't been banned in US school libraries yet) hearing this man speak of being a Christian along with the "Christians" that support him really has Jesus weeping inconsolably on the cross. And to head off any judge not lest ye be judged, this man passes judgement on himself in word and deed every day saving me the trouble.

I saw people suggesting this will cause a real brain drain

I've got relatives in Colorado Springs so I've spent a fair amount of time there. It is a really nice place, and some of those people will not want to live in Alabama. People in the military who've put in a lot of years towards retirement won't have a choice, but officers early in their careers and everyone on the civilian side do.

The funny thing is that while Colorado as a whole has gone blue, Colorado Springs is pretty conservative town. Trump is continuing the theme of his second term of screwing over the very people who voted for him.

It would be a really smart move for one of the civilian space companies (not you Musk!) to move/expand their operations to Colorado Springs, because there are going to a lot of actual rocket scientists who don't want to move but would need to find a job in that field to make staying in Colorado Springs possible without a change of career.

      Which states don't ?

I was under the impression that first cousin marriages have been permitted since the reformation.

      In Australia the requirement is

"Not be marrying a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild or sibling"

(The last prohibition often said not to apply stringently to Tasmanians. :)

The law uses ancestor and descendent so great grandchild doesn't pass muster either.

Having said that cousin-cousin marriages don't have a lot to recommend them genetically as the deficient Europe royal houses might attest and bespeak a certain lack of imagination.

      1. Hurn

        Re: Alabama

As of February 2014, 24 U.S. states prohibit marriages between first cousins, 19 U.S. states allow marriages between first cousins, and 7 U.S. states allow only some marriages between first cousins.

See wiki and other sites for citations. For the third group, of 7 states, they enforce the "one is infertile or both are elderly" (meaning: "no inbred kids") rule.

Alabama and Trump, a Match Made in Heaven?

Alabama is one of the poorest, least healthy and educationally backwards states of the Union. Its also pretty backward when it comes to racial and gender equality.

So why is it a surprise that its solidly pro-Trump? If you look at the actions of Trump and his MAGA supporters then they obviously want the rest of the US to be like them. The leaders of nations such as China and Russia likely can't believe their luck -- all they have to do is nod and smile, not rock the global boat too much and wait for the inevitable.

Meanwhile it was announced today by the governors of the western states (CA, OR & WA) that with the dismantling of the CDC they're going to step up and manage (initially) vaccination guidelines for our states. Its only a matter of time before they assume responsibilities that the Federal government is unwilling or unable to manage (or, rather, deliberately denies the need for). We, along with New England and other progressive states, already set the standards for environmental protection. Life must go on (and they don't call the center of the US 'flyover states' for nothing...).

Re: Alabama and Trump, a Match Made in Heaven?

Huntsville has a remarkable number of Ph.D.s. Colorado Springs, as somebody remarked earlier, is notably conservative.

      >> "and they don't call the center of the US 'flyover states' for nothing"

For the information of Britons who don't think that often about American geography, Colorado is quite near to Lebanon, Kansas, the geographical center of the contiguous 48 states.

For those not familiar with what that part of the US is like, I would encourage watching the Top Gear episode (season 9 - US special?) when Jeremy, May, and the Hampster drive across northern Florida and Alabama to New Orleans. Another few billion

The cost to relocate will undo several times over all of the claimed "savings" the Doggies have made by firing everybody that does actual work. As previously pointed out, not everybody working in Colorado can or will want to move to Alabama. That might strand programs that lose too many or key people. Relocating those that might be ok with moving will cost money. Housing may be far more expensive, especially if many people will be moving at the same time. Simple supply and demand.

Even if I were to accept a great job like the one a headhunter sent me today, chances are that I couldn't sell my home for enough money to buy a new home (outright since I'm paid off where I am) in the new city. I don't want to go back on the mortgage hamster wheel again. That great increase in pay might all go towards a new mortgage and increased property tax. Cost of living in that new town may also be more expensive. I'll be paying more in taxes as well on the income.
