All good things must come to an end, and so too must the blocky glory of the Kilopixel. As the wood and robotic marvel crested the 200,000-pixel mark, its creator pulled the metaphorical plug. Behold the wood-block wonder of the Kilopixel display READ MORE According to its creator, Ben Holmen, there had been 421 submissions …

Waterloo Station needs this, but bigger

They got rid of the lovely, noisy, Italian-designed flic-flac displays which you could see from almost anywhere in the station.

They replaced them with markedly inferior electronic jobbies which my tired old eyes can barely read.

This may be partly the fault of my eyes.

Yes, I know the other meaning of jobbies, most of my family are Glaswegian.

Make a bigger one and put it above platforms 1 to 12.

Make it out of Rubik cubes if you like.

    In other news

The above was my thousandth post.

It referred to the Kilo pixel!

What are the odds of that happening?

I've consulted a certain Mr Wells, late of Bromley in the county of Kent.

He informs me the odds are a million to one

As we all know million-to-one odds occur nine times out of 10.

Six times the resolution and four times the colour space.

    Just saying.

    I was pondering...

whether a Chinese manufacturer could knock these displays out using molded blocks etc and reusing obsolescing 3D printer active components.

But of course the tariffs into the US would kill that market.

I dunno. Maybe they could sell them to the 7,650,000,000 people who live outside the USA?

      I'd buy one.

Not much of a market. Outside of NYC, the US has very little public transportation. And for what public transport there is, schedules are somewhere between advisory and pure fiction.

    Season 2: Greyscale?

With the v1 device, depending on position: I.e. a 45° step for a grey tone, and possibly differentiating between 45° left vs 45° right for some graphic which look better that way.

With the v2 device using four sides of the cube as black, darkgrey, lightgrey and white, with using 45° steps resulting in 8 steps of white-grey-black. Like a TLC-SSD.

Me building that? Forget it, I would need more than seven years. Maybe when retired...

      Re: Season 2: Greyscale?

Sorry for the double posting. Ho did that happen?

At 2:01 local time, or 0:01 UTC, 31. August (aka last day of month) I write above the first time. Usually after a second or two the posting appears in the thread (I hit F5, to check for typos), the counter in the article page goes up, the thread is listed topmost under is listed in https://account.theregister.com/edit/forums/, and the "View them here" shows it.

However it did not appear five minutes later? Counter still "7 posts for that article"? OK, maybe I clicked something wrong, post again. Still does no appear? somewhere after 0:10 UTC the counter for "number of posts" jumped from 7 to 9. But my posting was still no visible to check for my famous typos? I count: It shows 7 postings, but the counter says 9? So both posting were successful?

OK, do the only reasonable in such a situation: Ignore, go to bed. Coming now, over six hours later: Aha, both posting appeared! And this posting is instantly visible as usual, and I correct my typos and grammar...

So, maybeeeee, there is a cron job starting last day of month at 0:00 UTC doing something which makes the forum go very very slow, which is my best shot why this happened. Did anyone else ever had something similar trying to post at last day of month 0:00 UTC?

        Re: Season 2: Greyscale?

Yes, ElReg's caged techies seem to work on the system on the last weekend of the month, usually in the time between when the San Francisco office closes down and the London office wakes up. In other words, when most of the users (ElReg staff) are busy drinkingsleeping. Whodathunkit.

Usually it's transparent to us lowly comentards, but I've been seeing glitches in this timeframe for years. It's probably unavoidable, at least for the most part.

That is the answer I hoped for. Don't mind the jobs in that time window (or any time window). Just knowing that I am not the only one seeing this is enough, especially since my post did not get lost - just delayed.

      Re: Season 2: Greyscale?

I'm sure that with appropriate colour selection, the 45° steps could be used to create a lenticular display - different images from left vs right.

No, I won't be building one.

So you plan to record this with a Stereo-3D camera to actually see that effect?
