My first memory of VMWare was actually doing testing in our support lab to see if VMWare would work with the IBM Shark storage array, in support of an RPQ for a large logistics customer. Our competition said it was ready to go with their arrays... Turns out VMWare's virtual SCSI stack was not ready for primetime, and after hitting countless Purple Screens of Death over the course of two weeks, I waved the customer off, but warned them that they problems I hit should have been hit by the other vendors, had they done more than smoke testing.
