Claude creator Anthropic has given customers using its Free, Pro, and Max plans one month to prevent the engine from storing their chats for five years by default and using them for training. A popup will show for existing users, asking if they want to opt out of a new "Help improve Claude" function, and Anthropic will prompt …

Anthropic is planning to store chats from ALL individual users, not just free ones. In this case you get to pay to be a customer, and a data source.

Blah, blah, blah, ....except when imposed by law. You know what they say, the law Trump(s) everything.

As a paid customer (pro plan) I got this pop-up, ensured I hadn't opted in, went to my Settings > Privacy and found I was 'accidentally' (presumably) still opted in, so I'm definitely unchecked, reloaded, still opted out, will check again in several days.

Would suggest anyone else might want to just double check in case they made an "oopsy", after all, when you vibe code you don't necessarily get what you thought you did...

There is no option to not opt in. The two options are "Accept" and "Not now".

If you click "Not now", you get automatically opted in on September 28th. You're only give the option to opt-in today, or wait and be auto-opted in later.

Being lucky enough to have access to a few different AI services, this was a fairly easy decision for me to dump Claude.

    "unless you opt out"

    No.

The default option should be "opt in", and anyone doing the contrary should be put in jail for five years.

      Re: "unless you opt out"

Esp. As it’s in contravention of GDPR/CCPA (for those it applies to).

      Re: "unless you opt out"

The first place that opt-in should be honoured is on websites being scraped for the initial training data, and anyone doing the contrary should be put in jail for five years, per offence.

"As a paid customer (pro plan) I got this pop-up, ensured I hadn't opted in"

Being a bit cynical I'd assume that the only thing you can "ensure" is that you clicked an on-screen option. Good luck with ever knowing what effect, if any, that would have. Data retention "accidents" can happen.

    OK

This is the plan. If you are UK or EEA, put some PII in the chat. Wait a year then hit them with a SAR.

    Hey Claude...

Jeff in No. 27 Acacia Avenue wants to know how deeply you have to bury a body to avoid GPR.

And is it true that you copped off with Alexa?

    Hmm.

    1. Find the physical addresses of the company and as many of the executives as possible.

    2. Set up a chat describing how a completely hypothetical, utterly fictitious, terror group might go to those addresses and slaughter all they find there, putting heads up on stakes outside the locations, with signs reading "AI pushers must die slowly and painfully".

    3. Research various old school methods of removing annoyances, with special reference to the rack, breaking on the wheel, boiling in oil, and such. Have the AI produce images of these annoyance-breakers, using images of the executives as illustrations.

Let's see how fast you get removed...
