back to article Tesla starts sort-of Robotaxi service in San Francisco by invite only

Elon Musk's goal of a fully autonomous car that could serve as a Robotaxi is getting another trial this week, albeit with a human operator behind the wheel. Five years after Musk predicted that there would be a million self-driving Tesla taxis on the road, they finally launched an invitation-only trial with a handful of …

including driving down the wrong side of the street and halting in the middle of the road

I thought that's what taxis did. ;-) So Musk's Johnny cab is a goer!

I don't see how, in the same breath, a claim that the robotaxi is 100x safer can be made at the same time.

      Eau de Musk?

I guess a perfume brand could be next in line, we've already had a burger restaurant after all.

No, no, no. It's always 'in about two years' with Musk.

Should be real soon with the next Gen self driving system Samsung are helping with. Esp. If it finally has LIDAR.

Cue class action for all those mis-sold gen version that doesn’t FSD.

Oh, we'll get that anyway since the older hardware doesn't look like it will be able to run the latest software and Elon had promised cars that appreciated in value due to being able to be whored out as gypsy cabs while the owner slept.

The usual refrain is one year or possibly a year and 3 months. The aerospace industry uses 2 years at the euphemism for "we don't know when".

With all the layoffs in US tech sector ...

the human labour substitution raison d'être of self(?) driving or robo cabs vanishes.

There should be legions of tech émigrés now cabbies and ubertards ready to regale the unsuspecting passenger with their dismal tales of their time in big tech and doubtlessly blaming Obama for all their woes.

Personally would prefer to walk and hoping that one of Space Karen's killer robo taxis doesn't have me in its sights; or take a bus where at least you can sit in the rear out of earshot of the driver.

What will the (safety) drivers wear?

Apparel from the Optimus Prime collection of look-like-a-robot line?

Or some sort of uniform? If so, which ones?

      SS - safety staff

      SA - supervising agent

      SD - safety driver

NSDAP - not so digital auto pilot

So Musk missed something from his to-do list while he was temporarily in charge of the country. I did nazi that happening.

Fully self driving - the driver is just part of the vehicle.

Just don't pull off the driver's goggles or the entire fleet will stop - just ask Doctor Zarkov.

Don't be so rude with Musk's self-driving cars

There are perfectly aligned with the Silly Con Valley motto : 'move fast and break things'.
