back to article India gets its turn on the Trump tariff train: 25% levy to start Friday

Just as signs pointed to a slight easing in global trade tensions, US President Donald Trump opened a new front in his trade offensive, this time with a 25 percent tariff on goods from India. Trump took to Truth Social today to announce his tariff, which will begin this Friday on August 1. The US president justified the move …

    The world's number one bully

Divide and rule. One day it's Canada, the next Mexico, the day after it's the EU, then India. The free world should form a trade block, and face down the ogre.

In case you didn't noticed, BRICS is not ideology based. Any country will be accepted if they intend to do just business without imposing democratic values or obligation to adhere to "world rule-based order". It's for countries that do not want to be bullied by US. Heck, even US can join it if they would be an honest country.

This is in the same line with the confiscation of Russian assets in US/EU banks. From now on, a lot of governments will think twice (as in, no thank you very much!) before investing in US dollar and doing business with Western banking system.

As a US administration official said on camera, in a few years US will no longer be able to sanction foreign countries.

Re: The world's number one bully

The stupid thing is tariffs only work if they are targeted. You can protect an industry by targeting a tariff as long as you are willing to put up with the inevitable price increase it brings. You can punish a country with tariffs, but only if you are targeting them at that country.

Putting tariffs against the entire world for everything won't achieve these goals. If every country has 15%+ tariffs, then US importers can't use threatening to go somewhere else as leverage to get a discount, since the seller knows that everywhere else has the same or higher tariffs. The importer just has to pay, or go without the product. Either of these options reduces consumer choice in the US and puts up the price reality for that product. Then domestic producers who see their demand increase while foreign competition is priced out can just jack up their prices and cash in.

The trump tariff policy only makes sense if the objective is just to collect as much revenue as possible, while ignoring the fact that that revenue is coming out of the pockets of US importers and pushing up prices for US consumers.

It's OK, tariffs mostly tax poor people who have to pay more of their salary buying food and stuff.

But were previously on the naughty list cos Melania drooled over JT and then cos Canada was the source of 0.00001% of US fentanyl

And of course the Canadians are very bad people, very bad.

Nah, they really didn't do that. They only said Canada intends to do it, unless of course some conditions are not met which will be a piece of cake for some interested people to make it so.

    China supplies 'phones, gets tarrifed.

Then India supplies 'phones, gets tarrifed.

Is DT trying to corner the 'phone supplier slot?

Has anyone checked, last year did TrumpCo bring in a few palettes of old feature-phones and gallons (more) of goldy-looking paint to give them the right sort of off-bling colour that you expect from a Trump product (including the steaks!)?

Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia,

Could that be because the USA has been supplying military equipment to their main enemy for 70 years

Obviously as a muslim country with close links to Afghani freedom-fighters, the USA feels honor bound to be Pakistan's closest friend and ally. But that is likely to rather sour relationships with the former Raj when it comes to buying kit to fight Pakistan.

Of course the USA could sell the same fighters to both India and Pakistan, but that might be too français for the Donald

    Trump Tariff "Train" ?

Trains generally start from a fairly sane useful point and arrive at a destination with some rational purpose.

More like a MAGA merry-go-round, crazy carousel or ratbag roulette.

Each day your nation is in the tariff lottery and what you "win" depends on what has got on Dear Leader's tits in the previous 24 hours but don't despair, like his latex cheques it's post-dated and with his Mexican food addiction it will inevitably be taco'd.

† I suspect not entirely figurative. He certainly behaves like a rancid old hag playing ins and outs with her will.

    Trump escalating?

Trump just said some new stuff about India and Russia :

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/siladityaray/2025/07/31/trump-lashes-out-at-india-and-russias-dead-economies-and--responds-to-medvedevs-war-threat/

“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care.”

And there are sanctions on some India companies cos of oil trade with Iran.

Sounds like negotiations are over and Trump wants India to join Russia (and China, even if India has problems with China).

Even worse! He realizes president Putin doesn't care about what president Trump thinks or does. The difference between the two is that while Putin is really leading Russia, Trump is not the one leading USA, he is being led (or maybe lied ?!) by some other people in his Dept of State.

    Self imposed sanctions

After a certain point, when the tariffs begin to prevent importers from brining in desired goods, it begins to have the same effect as sanctions on your own country.
