...2025 was when it all changed. When socials transformed from self-expression to entrapment. From now on, every word you write and every photo and video and podcast you post will be analyzed, weighed, and judged for something far more sinister than targeted advertising...
Bleh. It has always been the case. Now is simply the time the bubble popped.
And it t'was about time. It's just a shame it had to happen this way. Could've come to realization in a much more painless way.
Humanity has had a hierarchy in information sharing that has been going on for thousands of years:
Outside of professional information sharing (science, reports, etc), it has mostly gone like so:
- Share opinions with friends and family, and whoever you can personally reach (say, however many your local bar can hold, or however many can hear you when you scream in the local park): Everybody
- Reach a slightly larger audience (speeches, small scale local politics): Whoever gets the training and skills to reach that audience.
- Reach a larger, but still small audience (local newspaper reporting, etc): First level of either some specific training, or some skills.
- Increase on this: bigger newspaper, TV: Next level, needs improvement on skills mentioned above
- All levels above: Politics at scale, Media, TV, Audio-visual, entertainment, etc: substantial improvement on skills mentioned above. Years of studies for reporters and public figures (deontology, dos and don't, public relations studies, etc), one in thousands or one in a million natural talent for artists, PLUS studies still.
- But wait, you were in the past, centuries or thousands of years ago ? Sure. To be heard by many, you had to be a scholar, a priest or a leader (preferably a military one).
So reaching a larger audience automatically meant learning along about what comes with speaking to an audience of millions.
Then boom, what do you know, everybody and their brother can reach millions, with zero awareness of what goes with it, and with zero requirements of content quality - just a high enoug shock or kitten value.
T'was about time. Humanity has forever paid, written books, fought and died, for the right to remain private, then overnight we start paying to share our daily farts with the whole World. Gimmie a break.
