back to article ASML shares tumble as US tariff turmoil rattles investors

Shares in ASML fell by more than 8 percent after it warned that tariff uncertainty over future trade was increasing and net sales were down on the previous quarter. The supplier of advanced chipmaking equipment tried to hit an upbeat note, saying that AI is still a big driver of growth for both logic and memory chips, and …

The USA will drive ASML into the ground

Then pick up all the technology for about 1 cent on the dollar. ASML will be moved to the USA. And that will be the end of a major European tech company.

Nokia invented so much tech to do with mobile phone technology, but they made the mistake of suing in the USA. They should have sought an embargo on Apple in Europe and then worldwide. Instead their tech was picked up for a song. Goodbye Nokia.

Blindly following USA edicts has done nothing for Europe. It would be better for ASML to stop trading with the USA, and work with China instead.

More tariffs incoming from Taco man. Hope you have a big appetite, Europe. Because more is on the way. Canada is no better off. Capitulation Carney is his name.

      Probably not.

The lesson, though, is not just for China: do not embed 'Murrican tech into your tech.

Any country, any company, that wants to be able to sell on the world market (especially to China or friends thereof - Malaysia, for example) must work to remove - and never accept - American technologies into their company/knowledge/products. Much more than just cutting off China, Donald Turnip's export restrictions are really ensuring that American science is a non-starter.

Whether this will all blow over in four years or not is hard for me to predict. On the one hand, it's profitable to use what doesn't cost you so much (in the short term); on the other hard, some hard-learned lessons tend to stick.

Anyway, ASML isn't going to fail, it's a hugely important manufacturer of chip-making tech. If their business starts becoming unprofitable, they raise prices - and chip-makers pay those higher prices, because what else can they do? They have to make chips, and ASML has costs to cover.

I wonder what would happen if…

…the EU and/or Netherlands simply embargoed sales of ASML kit, consumables, and services to the USA and US controlled entities as a response to the tariff nonsense?

Kind of a nuclear option (“Nice semiconductor manufacturing program you used to have there, shame it’s just a bunch of buildings containing big lumps of expensive machinery you can’t use now…”) but…
