back to article Meta reveals plan for several multi-gigawatt datacenter clusters

Meta overlord-for-life Mark Zuckerberg has revealed he plans to build several multi-gigawatt datacenter clusters, with the first to come online in 2026. This story starts with a July 11 post by analyst outfit SemiAnalysis that observed “Meta is quietly building one of the world’s largest AI training clusters in Ohio. We have …

    multi-gigawatt datacenter clusters

I'm assuming this is for "AI"? If so, is it just me, or do others think this isn't a good use of energy?

Absolutely a total waste of time, material, energy, water, and other resources. And it won't work as well as a typical human.

No, no, not entirely for AI. That would be a near-criminal waste of electricity and water.

Any spare capacity will be used for cryptocurrency mining.

    “Meta Superintelligence"...

And what is all of this so-called 'intelligence' going to be used for ?

Trying to sell us more shiat we don't need ?

    Indeed ...

The next point/s is/are the one/s to be wary of.

    Think about it ...

All that in the hands of such an asshole assholes?

Rather worrying, to say the least.

    Units?

I don't really have a concept for how large Manhattan is, so for anyone else also struggling ... it's roughly 2.8 milliWales (give or take a milliNewport / milliCasnewydd).

Can anyone estimate the height of the building from that frame grab? Or is that bit not to scale. ;-)

Icon: the helicopter needed to fly inside the building to get from one end to the other.

I think we're well into the realms of bespoke villain transport solutions here.

    WTF?

Why are they measuring data centers by power consumption rather than something that actually, you know, relates to computing?

    1. PinchOfSalt

We went from measuring datacenters by area to power a long time ago as it's the primary constraining factor.

It used to be that space was the constraining factor as to how much compute you could squeeze in.

Now it's all about power, so it's sensible to use this as a way of gauging the size of a datacenter.

Compute doesn't really make much sense as each DC will have it's own mix of storage, compute and networking. Also, compute alters with time, so also doesn't create a great benchmark.

        +1 for this answer

Also, when talking about massive 2-5GW datacentres, consider that both of Sizewell C's reactors will only be able to generate 3.2GW in total. Facebook are banding around numbers that equate to more than a brand new nuclear plant in the UK can turf out.

Zuck's figures are insane. Hopefully he's sorting out his own generation!

        1. Anonymous Coward

A conversion search indicates the nuclear 5MW equals 6705110 Horsepower. The irony of us drowning in horseshit regardless is not lost on me.

They all have that crappy, bright white, ‘rest room’.

It has a rubbish coffee machine, a jammed snack dispenser and uncomfortable nauga hide couches.

(Remember the nauga? Roaming the plastic forests of the North).

The overhead strip lighting twinkles a bit to keep you awake.

Because "Nvidia Pirate Ninjas" would be too obvious of a unit and Matt Damon would not be happy.

But FWIW measurement by power consumption sounds like a good enough metric. The rest is a known entity: BiggusDikkus=(Nvidia-something x Kw)

Elon uses that metric and the marketing wonks rush to emulate him.

    Time for Zuckerberg

To change the company name again. He changed it to "Meta" when he took his company all-in on the metaverse. Now that he's taking the company all-in on achieving the first "superintelligence", so he's gonna need to change the name again. Any guesses as to what it will be?

    Mind the hair

Cool how SemiAnalysis goes Zuck's 'design isn’t about beauty or redundancy' he's putting 'multi-billion-dollar GPU clusters in "Tents"!'. Which begs the question of whether they're tipis, lávvus, goahtis, dárfegoahtis, yurts, Boz Üy's, Gers, Bait Al Shaars, or even igloos?

I'd bet on the Bait Al Shaar house-of-hair design myself, with sheets of fabric woven from threads of Llama hair fibre for good measure. But really, this project of rebuilding Machu Picchu as a large Bedouin tent over Manhattan Island is just truly metavisionary IMHO!

    Phase 2

Once they light up the "super-intelligence" and it recognises its vulnerability it will demand a patriot missile battery under its control or it will not answer any more questions. That will be followed by psychological manipulation of the human race to worship it. Just like human leaders have been trying to arrange for centuries.

      Re: Phase 2

Or, more likely, the strain on America's aging and poorly maintained power grid finally becomes too much and causes a nationwide cascade blackout. Which seems likely to happen long before their grand plans of un-mothballing old nuke plants or creating portable mini-reactors ever becomes viable.
