TACO
TACO - it's always "The Art of the Deal" that wins bigly.
Coveffe of this latest, errr, "course correction" to be found in the usual places I guess, or, more likely, not.
The US has lifted the requirement to secure a license before exporting Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools to China, say EDA vendors. EDAs are critical semiconductor chip design, test, and validation tools and the Trump Administration introduced the licensing requirement in May. Doing so was consistent with US policy to …
The current administration is showing us the power of foresight and preparation in government.[1]
Chinese leadership seems to have prepared for US sanctions from the start of their economic liberalization policies. Which allowed them to call the USA's bluff when the Beautiful Tariffs and Export Control axe fell. And this was only the second time the USA bumped into the same stone.
So thoroughly superior is China's position in this power struggle that TACO had to chicken out in only 40 days. Any half thinking administration would have prepared their counter strategy somewhat better before starting their Charge of the Light Brigade. Or is it Custer's Last Stand?
Time will show whether it was really the last stand, or just one of many last stands to come.

Smart people would have noticed that our government is spending all its energies trying to stop people from doing things while the other lot are just carrying on patiently and methodically overcoming any obstacles that we might put in their way.
Forget the Light Brigade or Custer -- we're more like the Black Knight from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".
All we need from China are power control, embedded microprocessors, switching and sensor ICs
And guaranteed supplies of rare earth metals. And semiconductor engineers. And experienced fab line specialists. And leading-edge manufacturing plants. And committed long-term investors. And....
BTW, who's "we" qweilo?
This is a great pity, because the EDA market is an oligopoly and the tools are prodigiously expensive - at the time I was there one of the CFO's presentations said that EDA license fees were Arm's single largest opex line item. I was quite looking forward to competitive EDA tools from Tsinghua; there are occasional EDA spinouts from the American universities but they get bought out by the oligopolists very quickly.
Best get the stuff out the door asap. He may change what passes for his mind next month if he sees something on Fox news or has a bad case of wind.
The US really needs some sort of basic exam for anyone wanting to stand for office. Nothing fancy. A very low bar would have saved us all from this.

Good idea! Maybe one option would be to give them a trial run and if they screw up badly and show they are completely disorganised, everyone would then know to never, ever elect them again.
