back to article EU rattles its purse and AI datacenter builders come running

It's pork barrel time in Europe for Nvidia (and possibly AMD) as corporations bid for a slice of the €20 billion ($23.6 billion) fund to build proposed AI Gigafactories to advance the EU's AI credentials. The European Commission (EC) says it has received an "overwhelming response" to its Call for Expression of Interest in …

    First you build it.

Then you find something AI to do with it...

Please build their nuke powerplants first, we actually have a known use for that much clean power.

Was going to say, how do they plan on powering all this? Russian fuel?

Surely, firstly you build AI chip production in Europe that is wholly independent of the Whitehouse…

    Thumb Up

    Congratulations

Well done on jumping aboard the hype train. Don't you worry your pretty little head about what will be done with all that power-guzzling equipment, I'm sure you'll draft requirements and laws to ensure that they are powered only by clean electrons, without bothering to hand any money out for that. Nooo. You take care of ensuring that whatever power we have is used 300%. We'll worry about how to keep our lights on.

Just use the cleansing, disinfecting property of copper. Strain your electrons through a cable, and I promise, they’ll come out shiny clean at the other end.

What a criminal waste of tax money.

Meanwhile the Middle Kingdom makes Deepseek, capable of writing your grocery list for you without browning out the grid or, more salient to the EU, running on Russian gas...

Maybe instead of following the US into further misadventures of "why more money to my business chums to buy more servers no worky" you just forgo the AI nonsense?

"Currently the region is lagging behind the US and China in the AI model development arms race"

Does it matter? What are the advantages of (possibly) coming first?

How would the builders feel about, in exchange for EU investment, the EU takes part of the profits (if any)?

Can’t let the US be the only one governing the world by hallucination!
