    In other words, someone has just a valuable, if costly, lesson in paying attention to the console before validating a command.

    What it suggests to me is that we have made our computing environment so complicated that even security admins don't always know the consequences of what they are attempting.

    That doesn't look promising to me.

      In my experience, the problem is that the wrong people are in the room.

      The sysadmins I have worked with are often brilliant people, but they lack the software engineering background to grasp the implications of their decisions, or (and this is often as important) of the decisions made by the makers of their tools.

      Yes, we SWEs are more expensive than the OPEs. (The OPEs are uniformly underpaid, btw.) But once the work of configuring the infrastructure crosses a certain threshold, even really good OPEs just won't get you there.

      This is made worse by the fact that the tools are not designed to be used by SWEs. OPEs have to actively overcome design limitations of their tools. It's just rough.
