back to article Microsoft's May Patch Tuesday update fails on some Windows 11 VMs

Microsoft's latest Patch Tuesday update is failing to install on some Windows 11 machines, mostly virtual ones, and dumping them into recovery mode with a boot error. Its only recommendation to avoid the problem for now is to dodge the update. According to an advisory published on Wednesday, the problem affects Windows 11 …

So, Microsoft is still batting .000 in 2025.

    I disagree!

"'The operating system couldn't be loaded' is never a great message"

    Make lemonade!

Instead of reinstalling the obviously broken-by-design Windows (again!), install an OS that doesn't get completely ballsed up on a regular basis.

Which one? It doesnlt matter. There are plenty to choose from.

Can you imagine how much time/money your company would have saved if you had switched to almost anything else twenty years ago?

    Update To Date

And they want to take over all software packages updates, yeah that's a problem right there.

Once again Microsoft shits on it's own kitchen!

Has anyone else found that the May updates for Server 2022 breaks WSUS? The servers I updated prior to rebooting the WSUS server reported and were updated in WSUS. After patching and rebooting the WSUS server, my remaining servers state hasn't updated... good job Microsoft...

    re : Microsoft hasn't responded

So much for support in MS world.... Yeah, nowt new here, move along.

It really is time for MS to get sued into submission over their shoddy POS that most of us are forced into using.

      Not gonna happen.

All they'll do is buy a boatload of Trump coin and that would be the end of your legal standing in the US. You agreed to this when you accepted the license you couldn't read because it was 1GB in size (to be honest, with AI it's IMHO surprising that someone hasn't tried that one already).

They shot their own Azure foot!

A lot of Azure VMs are affected. Maybe NOW they start to take Windows-Quality more serious again! <im src="facepalm.gif"></img>

Again? When did they ever take Windows quality seriously?

TBH, that's the first time I've ever seen Window sand quality in the same sentence

Right in the middle between XP SP1 and XP SP2. Win7 was fine too after SP1. Win8.x had messed up the UI, but below that well done. Win10 to. And then came Corona and Windows 11, spiraling down since 2020 on both UI and OS, sadly.

Windows NT was pretty serious about stability, IIRC.

You would think an O/S company that also hosts said O/S as VMs would test their patches to ensure those VMs don't go bork, ah yes, time for another entry to Microsoft's own goal of the month competition entry. Don't worry we have a QA co-pilot script for that.

    Annoyingly misleading message

"Your PC/device needs to be repaired"

No, it doesn't. "Repair" is commonly understood to mean physical service of the hardware.

Typical Microsoft. At least, the message gives you the name of the missing file. That's an improvement.

"Your PC/Device needs to be repaired. The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors. File: ACPI.sys. Error code: 0xc0000098." '

Microsoft unsure ... 'if there's a workaround other than removing the patches.' which of course reqires a bootable system.

Helpful as always. Still, there's always System Restore. 'System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed'.

Praise the Lord for the ability to do bare metal restores from an independent backup system.
