back to article HP Inc. hastens China exit as tariffs kick a hole in its profits

HP Inc. is close to ending production of North-America-bound products in China, after US tariffs kicked a hole in its quarterly profits. “A quarter ago, we shared that our goal was to have less than ten percent of the products in North America being shipped from China by September,” HP president and CEO Enrique Lores told …

    Keep pandering, but...

Trump will screw you over at some point regardless of what country you move your production to.

He'll find a way to screw you over even if you do what we "wants" and are stupid enough to move your production to the US. He'll change whatever economic policies you built that massive investment on overnight.

      WTF?

      Re: Keep pandering, but...

HP isn't pandering, the move seem to be based on economic reasons.

HP is moving production from China to SE Asia and Mexico and "to a certain extent in the US", which is corporate speak of next to nothing. The US is probably HP's main market and those Trump tariffs on their products would be untenable.

They have also "removed the US as a distribution hub for products sold in Canada or to Latin America" to avoid any further tariffs imposed by them. That is the opposite of pandering to Trump.

Are you angry that HP is moving production out of China? How fat is Xi Jinping?

        Re: Keep pandering, but...

I'm certainly not "angry" at that, nor a fan of China- or rather, of the Chinese government- and I've nothing against moving production elsewhere.

And my post could have been a little more well-written if I'd had more time to spend on it.

It was more intended to convey that even trying to get round Trump's tariffs by shifting distribution of US products to those outside China won't necessarily work (see Apple building more phones in India for an example).

And that the ever-changing and capricious nature of his policies means that they're going to be counter-productive to his alleged aim of moving production back to the US.

Ultimately companies can- and will- like HP, rearrange where Chinese and non-Chinese-built products are distributed and alter production levels at different locations to get round the problem in the short term.

But anything that requires more permanent and long-term.investment and change? Not worth the risk.

Trump and his policies are something that can only ever be trusted on a short-termist basis.

I would read the ‘and to a certain extent the USA’ that kit in transit will not be landed and will stay ‘outside of the USA’ in either a free port or bonded warehouse to avoid tariffs. Edits being sold on if that’s how they do their logistics.

But really stupid would be allowing Trump's home inkjet to refuse to print because some color cartridge has "expired". That would ensure a quick purge of HP management. [fingers crossed]

Based on my experience of the low end PITA HP products an AI PC would likely be an anally inserted PC.

† there is a surprisingly wide choice of what PC might mean in this context; Pulsating cylinder one of the least gross.

      Re: pardon me?

It's a PC that, if you don't generate enough content to phone home with, it'll generate that content for you. So you'd best be careful what you browse, otherwise your love of horseback riding, travel, fine cigars and stamp collecting with a little pron when it's quiet might generate some VERRRRY unsavory targeted ads in your future.

    Offshoring shocker

The CEOs that offshored all this stuff should be arrested. Short term thinking. Chasing their own bonuses. Screwing the countries that made their business possible.

These fools trained the exact same people that are now hacking our hospitals.

I cant stand trump but EVERY job removed from China and India is a good thing. I find it REALLY hard to have sympathy for any corporation that gets hacked or supplier hacked after shipping out their jobs for a quick buck.

If a european firm started selling servers, I'd rip out every HPE, Dell product and replace it overnight

1980s. Chances are most of those CEOs are all dead by now. But hey, they got theirs and so did their offspring, so what do they care?

Beside, only damn commie countries like Europe and China actually jail CEOs for hurting anyone but other rich people.

    FAIL

    They say they are.

But the reality is that there is no place on earth that can scale like Hon Hai/Foxconn. So here's what will happen:

HP keeps China production, but only sells those products to the rest of the world. USA bound product manufacturing are sent to another country, but it's a game of whack-a-mole-favored-status-of-the-day and deliveries will become unreliable and useless in the USA. However, so will ALL the other tech companies, so HP will not be at any more disadvantage than anyone else.

However, even with the recent temporary stop order on tariffs from the court today, uncertainty is still the rule.

The USA has absolutely boned itself for at least the next ten years no matter what happens. Brexit, GOP style. I'll think up a clever name for this whole debacle, soon.

Well, as simple as it is, "trumping" could become a verb.

Example: "That grocery store tramp itself when it started selling expired milk" (The verb "to trump" is irregular)

But then there might be also the verb "to musk" which can be applied to very poor PR moves.
