back to article Cybercrime is 'orders of magnitude' larger than state-backed ops, says ex-White House advisor

Uncle Sam's cybersecurity apparatus can't only focus on China and other nation-state actors, but also has to fight the much bigger damage from plain old cybercrime, says former White House advisor Michael Daniel. And the Trump administration's steep cuts to federal government staff are making that a lot harder. Daniel …

    Censorship Ageny CISA

CISA is a threat to the U.S. Constitution and to all NATO nations. They censored on behalf of Pharma oligarchy.

    https://judiciary.house.gov/media/press-releases/new-report-reveals-cisa-tried-cover-censorship-practices

Facebook, Google and the like aided them in this unconstitutional effort.

Cancel them right now. Never hire the censors to government service again.

The others can join the FBI and NSA and continue genuine cyber security work, as opposed to soviet union style activities.

      Re: Censorship Ageny CISA

Well, on the one hand - since CISA was formed in 2018, under the first Trump administration, and according to this report had gone fully rogue by 2020, you may be right.

On the other hand, you are citing a report by "the Select Committee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government". As big a bunch of carpet-chewing nutjobs, wackos and conspiracy theorists as you'll find outside the present cabinet. And after looking at what they're citing as "evidence", I'm not inclined to take them any more seriously than usual.

    Help from Uncle Sam?

That will 100% depend on how much the org requesting it has [cough][cough] donated to Trump's bank account or bought enough of his $TRUMP meme coin.

If states suffering natural disasters are getting zero from Trump and this includes Red States, what hope does private biz have unless they have made a generous tithe payment to the Dear Leader.

This is the USA in 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030, 2031, 2032 and even beyond. Trump is not going to leave power. There might not even be any mid-term elections if the more rabid parts of his administration have their way.

      WTF?

      Re: Help from Uncle Sam?

Trump is most definitely going to leave power! The questions are how and when.

The next assassination attempt may be successful, or he may have a heart attack, or the population will vote him out much sooner than he expects, or any number of other misfortunes might befall him.

One can only hope, and work out how to cope and work around him in the meantime. If I were American I’d be desperately hoping it will be sooner rather than later, to minimise the damage he is inflicting on the economy and reputation of the US, although he’s not exactly helping the rest of us either.

"or the population will vote him out much sooner than he expects"

Unfortunately, that's not an option. There is no mechanism for the populace to vote out a sitting US President. Congress could oust him but that would mean enough of both sides of the aisle would have to combine forces and that's highly unlikely. They don't do what's right if there's any chance of it negatively impacting their career.

make it illegal to make ransomware payments!!

big money flow to the criminal assoles of this world is slowly but surely changing the power dynamics

all the peoples in legitamate jobs created to deal with this shite need to have their lobbying ignored for the greater good

aint ever happening, especially the uber individualistic american culture... europe hmmmmmm, possibly, but the american culture has pervaded deep over the preceeding decades into the younglings and they are all grown up now with kids

      Re: simplez

When you pay a listed terrorist organization in a blackmail scheme, I would imagine you would face a PR nightmare and/or legal consequences as well as several quiet sessions with acronym agencies. The fact that cybercrime gets a pass just means it's not a focus (yet) of prosecutors and/or intelligence agencies to the same extent.

But I would imagine public support is very high to change that, who would sympathize with cybercrooks disabling a hospital or stealing its funds?

Then again, there's very little room in most prison systems, let alone room in the judicial systems, so perhaps somewhere in the adminsitrations a decision was made 'we'll get to it if and when, not now'

      Re: simplez

If you make it illegal to pay ransoms, all that will happen is that companies will never admit to having been hit by ransomware. You'll just sweep the whole thing under the carpet.

      1. HMcG

        Re: simplez

Not if you make the punishment for trying to conceal a ransomware payment a criminal offence by the CEO , CFO and CTO, with jail terms of a minimum of 10 years.

It’s surprising what can be achieved when the responsible parties are actually held to account.

      2. I am the liquor

        Re: simplez

A lot of people in an organisation will be involved in dealing with a ransomware attack, and most of them are not paid enough to be an accomplice to a felony. It would be tough to keep it quiet.

    As mentioned before..

This is all a convoluted scheme to have large amounts of fraud either being claimed by Republicans in 2026, or committed by actors loyal to their cause. Russia doesn't need to invade our networks, because those loyal to Dictator Trump will already be hacking systems to prevent the one means we have to remove him from the White House.

The underintelligent will scream and cry foul just as they're brainwashed to believe, and we'll get that much closer to a... civil issue nationwide.
