back to article Wyden warns telcos still leave Senate in the dark after Trump DOJ snooping scandal

AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile US failed to set up systems to notify lawmakers when government snoops came calling for their phone records - a contractual obligation that went ignored until recently, according to US Senator Ron Wyden. The Oregon Democrat on Wednesday sent a letter to his fellow lawmakers urging them to choose …

    Weasel words...again

"We have received no legal demands regarding Senate offices under the current contract"

Also, how many illegal demands have been (a) received and (b) complied with?

      > "[S]urveillance poses a significant threat to the [Public]'s independence and the foundational principle of [limited government]," [people] wrote. "If law enforcement officials, whether at the federal, state, or even local level, can secretly obtain [the public's] location data or call histories, our ability to [live in peace and with dignity and security] is severely threatened."

What's good for the gander is good for the goose

"AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile US failed to set up systems to notify lawmakers when government snoops came calling for their phone records"

See how it feels when people spy on YOU? Not so happy now that the shoe's on the other foot, huh?

"In many cases, the DOJ also secured non-disclosure orders that barred providers from informing the targets their data had been seized."

How about that's the case 100% of the time? I've never heard of any time where the provider was ever allowed to inform the target.

"We have received no legal demands regarding Senate offices"

We can't discuss bugging their mobiles, wives' mobiles, and home phones, though!!

Most competently written NDA’s are voided by an Unlawful Act. There is also Whistleblower legislation and ‘In the Public Interest’ defences.

Quasi adherence to the precious Constitution.

Shame on the NRA for violating the 2nd amendment by failing to setup a ‘well regulated militia’ and furnishing them with some arms to rise up again this Authoritarian Government…. surely what they have been blowing hard about since their creation.

These are not NDAa keeping an employee from talking, this is the government telling somebody to not talk to avoid compromising an ongoing investigation. I believe that courts have generally found this to be OK, to a point. Yes, this puts the telco in an impossible situation.

The Constitution does not say that Congresscritters can not be surveilled. They can't be arrested in certain situations or have their speech on the floor used against them.

Can we talk about the important question here?

Why is that bloke from Cheers doing the snooping?

Ironic that the guy who always complains about "Lawfare" is actually its foremost exponent, whether the matter at hand involves stiffing small contractors or going after political enemies, both real and imaginary.

...But Fort Meade Has Implemented NSO/Pegasus On All Senators............

.......so it DOES NOT MATTER whether the mobile service provider has owned up....or not!!

    Misdirection as usual!!

Does Ron Wyden actually trust what he has been told? If it was me......I'd be using a new burner every week!

Re: ...But Fort Meade Has Implemented NSO/Pegasus On All Senators............

      @AC

.....then there's internet traffic. Maybe Ron Wyden always uses a VPN, so the snoops can't snoop on traffic from Bulgaria?

That would be snoops ALLEGEDLY ON THE SAME SIDE!!!!

But traffic analysis might just be following the traffic on Ron's friends!!

      .....also infected with NSO/Pegasus!!

Just how paranoid should a US Senator get?
