back to article Intel needs external foundry customers to make 14A process node pay off

Intel is wooing external chip customers for its 14A process node to justify the high costs involved, and aims for the foundry division to break even by 2027 - as part of ongoing effort to shake off the struggles of recent years. Stop

    Everyone, from businesses to demagogues, thinks history can be changed simply with words...

    From the very beginning of the article:

    "...Intel...aims for the foundry division to break even by 2027..."

    Check your archives, El Buidro...It was reported on these very pages that Pat Gelsinger expected Intel---as a whole; no qualifiers--- to be profitable "...by 2024...".;

    They need to prove they can deliver on 18A

    Before people will beat down their door for 14A.

    If they can deliver on it then I could see even companies who are fully committed to TSMC like Apple toss some business Intel's way to test the waters. If Apple had them fab their third generation modem (baseband only, the transceiver contains analog parts 14A wouldn't support and wouldn't benefit from such a shrink anyway) which would probably hit around the time 14A does that would throw a LOT of volume Intel's way and not be too much of a risk for Apple - if Intel flubs it they could continue using their second generation modem for another year.

      I expect your "test the waters" phrasing is probably spot-on.

      I can't imagine any company making significant investment in Intel's fab business without some evidence that they can back it up. Nobody is likely to make "bet the company" moves with Intel as a business partner at this point.

    Keep on dreaming, Intel. The writing is on the wall for your bankruptcy...

    Joke

    Simple solution

    Intel gift $400 million to Arthur Daley's American cousin (the orange fella) and as if by magic they are suddenly allowed to take orders from China. As Arthur used to say "the world is your lobster".

      Re: Simple solution

      That’s a gross insult to the character and ethics of one Arthur Daley.

      … and no-one to write the feem tune either to ‘The Orange Miasma’.

        How about "Flash Harry" (AKA Henry Cuthbert Edwards), his american cousin would take that money - Deep down you know it is true, he is riff-raff!
