back to article Free Blue Screens of Death for Windows 11 24H2 users

Keeping with its rich history of updates that break Windows in unexpected ways, Microsoft has warned that two recent patches for Windows 11 24H2 are triggering blue screen crashes. The software in question, April cumulative update KB5055523 and March preview update KB5053656, are causing the freeze-ups on devices running …

  1. Who-me

You know, I was a Windows tech for many, many years. Been retired for a few years now, but even I'm starting to wonder if it's too late to learn Linux.

Frankly, this is the best time. I'm more of a BSD person but Linux is highly polished and you have the advantage of being able to learn at your own pace and just revert to using Windows when necessary.

Personally I find Linux rather too like Windows in some ways, but that will in some ways be due to both the commercial pressures and the userbase.

It's never too late to learn how to deal with a proper OS.

I have very little formal training with regards to IT systems, and get on just fine with Linux Mint on my PC's at home. Some of the stuff in terminals feels a little arcane but Mint has a GUI for 99% of stuff you need to do.

We gave up with Windows when it became apparent we were spending more time and effort resolving issues caused by the operating system than we were fixing the applications that actually ran the business. At that point, it became a simple business decision that reduced support costs and staff frustration. Granted, we didn't have a huge investment in MS integration or back-end apps so the migration was fairly trivial. There was a need for some user re-training but every time I see another story about how Redmond has stymied their users yet again, I'm glad we made the move when we did.

Linux is EASY compared to Windows. Just stunningly... easy.

Faster to. Mostly because it's not spying on you 24/7 and mostly because because the devs actually care about quality.

      Thumb Up

It isn't. My Father, in his mid 70s installed Ubuntu and never looked back. He is a typical 'user' level type person so it was a proud moment for me.

Using Linux really is not that hard. Unless you like digging into the innards. But with Linux, you still own your computer, unlike Microsoft's thinking.

80 years old and not liking any Windows past 7. Change for change sake suck. Articles like this confirm my preferences.

Mint Linux on a laptop or desktop is just as good as WinShit. You don't really need to know Linux .

    Auto update

If be really pissed if that was me. This month all my machines decided to auto update and reboot even though I have then set not to auto update, not too reboot if there is someone else logged on (there always is)

Even more do if I got that bsd

Then again 24h2 if so shit I have avoided it

How much does this cost end users ?

    Lost productivity

Time wasted fiddling with system administration

Having to buy in help when you cannot do it yourself

    Another nail

My last gig supported Sin11, every month new shit, sysprep having a wet dream, but not. CoPlop dropping in making sysprep have another dream... appx packages disturbing the waters where sysprep lives, throw yourself in next time!

"it clearly has its hands full"

It's had its hands full since Vista.

And it hasn't been able to add hands.

Re: "it clearly has its hands full"

Some would be inclined to argue they never had any hands to start with...

<< rollback should apply automatically via Windows Update - though it might take up to 24 hours to kick in >>

Best you update on a weekend then.

Add that one to your list,m (which was not limited to Windows server but Windows 11 as well.)

    Eject Copilot!!

Pull the ejection handle on Copilot and all the A.I garbage few users want in Windows 11 and concentrate on quality and stability of Windows 11 Microsoft!!

You DO remember the users don't you Microsoft? Those pesky millions that use Windows, the product that you claimed Apple had stolen their GUI design from, despite the fact they had their GUI established on the market with the Lisa computer in '83 (followed by the Macintosh in '84) seven years before Windows 3 became king and twelve years before Windows 95. You both go the inspiration for the GUI from the Xerox PARC Alto PC, as you were there with Apple for the demonstration.

    Can't remember

When I last saw a BSOD despite using Windows for development daily.

      Re: Can't remember

For me, it would have been when I was doing kernel-level driver development on NT 4.0. None since.

    This is why

Cyber Essentials demand to patch quickly is bullshit. And why I keep advocating for delay Windows updates.

  12. cookiecutter

    And yet

The number of people I've argued with about not rolling out patches on day 1, even zero days.

And I still think that is inane that we not only allow software firms to roll out faulty shite but actually encourage it by setting up patching teams etc instead of insisting vendors actually do testing

  13. Swordfish1

Sick and tired of 24H2, can't update atm, as it will cause a system crash - with no BSOD, which then wrecks the component store.

Even with having updates on hold, I get a random BSOD, every 6 weeks or so.

23H2 - no issues -wish I'd stayed on that MS.

Totally fed up with wasting so much time on 24H2
