back to article 4chan, the 'internet’s litter box,' appears to have been pillaged by rival forum

Thousands of 4chan users reported outages Monday night amid rumors on social media that the edgy anonymous imageboard had been ransacked by an intruder, with someone on a rival forum claiming to have leaked its source code, moderator identities, and users' IP addresses. If those claims are legit, it's a big deal with potential …

    Unfair to litter boxes

I don't know about you, but I scoop my cat's litter box daily and discard the contents rather than spreading them around and displaying them proudly. Also, I would never let my cat go anywhere near 4chan. He'd probably wind up as the subject of kitty porn.

    Elmo the Antichrist

Gee, apparently Elmo posts like a 13yo edgelord and thinks Hitler did nothing wrong. What a shock!

Pardon the reddit link, the armpit of the internet, but this is where it's at:

Hard to tell if it's Elon, but at least the messages are insane enough to be actually from him.

We do know he has a very severe Messiah-complex, just by knowing what he has actually said in public.

    PHP is not…

… “the open-source scripting language used for web development”, unless you append “by people with no sense of shame”. Which does cover 4chan, to be fair.

      Re: PHP is not…

PHP is fine. Modern PHP, at least. The issue is the sheer amount of low-quality code, developed by people with no natural right to be doing so.

      Tool's a tool.

To paraphrase this commentary, you might be able to drive a nail by hitting it with a rock, but it doesn't make a rock the right choice.

          Re: PHP is not…

You realise that 'commentary' is from 2012, right? You still quoting it as a 'proof' that PHP is bad just shows you have no recent knowledge of the language other than prejudices perpetuated on the internet.

This reaction commentary is also 5 years old, but even then the lion's share of problems from the original commentary had been fixed:

You can write crappy code in any language, if we stopped using C/C++ because of all the people who don't know how to check for buffer overflows, we'd have to shut down most of the internet.

Every sufficiently-complex IT project eventually ends up embedding a Turing-complete interpretator.

PHP is one such that escaped and went feral.

I hope someone uses those IP addresses

To correlate to actual names of people and makes it public. Shouldn't be that hard to do since at least for broadband IP addresses are relatively fixed for long periods of time.

They loved doxxing people for years, seeing them doxxed would be the ultimate karma! And if some of them end up losing their jobs over it in an economy spiraling into recession and end up homeless, all the better!

Re: I hope someone uses those IP addresses

      Slow down there Satan.

And residential IPs are not guaranteed to be static. Especially in the modern era where IPv4 is in limited quantities, many ISPs frequently rotate their consumers. I'm a living example: If I so much as sneeze at my router, I'll get a new IP.

Apparently they did heavy fingerprinting of users, you'd be more likely to get matches based on that data rather than just IP. But I doubt that will be released.

Re: I hope someone uses those IP addresses

Apparently they've already identified Elon's 4chan account, though of course his apologists are denying it is him. Not sure why they bother, it is all terrible of course but after the Nazi salute he really can't stoop any lower.

I've never visited but if it's everything I've heard it to be then those IP addresses are most likely owned by VPN companies or Tor exit nodes.

If you look at the leak, they mostly don't—lots of janitors and only a few mods. One admin IIRC.

    I wonder...

I wish good luck to the hackers

The problem with hacking 4chan is, invariably the data you downloaded off them will have child porn.

Now you have a copy of it on your disk. Congratulations, you just violated pretty much any child porn law out there.

It wouldn't be exactly a massive loss.

4chan has been trashy for over 25 years at least. /b/ was pretty much the worst of it then back in 2000, with the occasionally funny green text. Most of the time it was flooded with lame attempts to "outkek" each other, but even then the seeds of danger were well sown with even a few boards seemingly dedicated to hacking, and of course it being the birthplace of QAnon - which kinda debunks the whole "honeypot" aspect, doesn't it? It's honestly a wonder that site wasn't permanently taken offline or destroyed before being "rekt" now.
