back to article Microsoft's final Exchange Server 2019 update still missing as support deadline ticks down

Microsoft has yet to deliver its promised Cumulative Update 15 for Exchange Server 2019 due to some issues, as the countdown to the end of support for the email platform continues. Redmond told the world just before Christmas that December was not a good time to release a Cumulative Update (CU). Therefore, it was pushing the …

"The good news is that this should mean CU15 is being tested more thoroughly than the November 2024 Security Update (SU)"

I wouldn't like to bet on that...

The Exchange strategy has been a complete mess for a number of years - remember that there was no 2022 version either (previously there was normally one released around the same time as each major Windows Server release), There is also still the ridiculous situation of needing to have an on-prem Exchange server to manage mailboxes attached to hybrid accounts, unless you want to use Powershell for every little thing (Powershell is fine for bulk changes, but too much hassle to use it for every minor change). They could easily have released a lightweight GUI-based management tool for this, with none of the mailbox hosting or transport functionality (it could have been part of RSAT, even). But of course they haven't and are showing no signs of doing so.

Ms have struggling for some years with Exchange Server…

I remember first becoming aware of the problems MS were having with Exchange was when I started looking at upgrading from 2013 in circa 2019, looking at upgrading to Server 2019.

Discovering that MS clearly wanted people to move to 365, hence was shortening support life (2013 EoL Apr-23; 2016 EoL Oct-25; 2019 EoL Oct-25), yet was failing to deliver replacement products/services.

    >” The successor to Exchange Server 2019, Exchange Server SE, is still expected to be released early in the third quarter of this year.”

Given how far back this was announced and the struggles MS have had delivering anything Exchange, I fully expect this date to slip.

Which would seem to indicate this is the end of the road for Exchange Server.

Given also the various bits about SQL Server, I wonder about the future of MS’s other on-premises business products such as BizTalk… I presume those who brought fully into the MS enterprise platform are now hostages to fortune…

Um, slight correction there : Redmond has always struggled with the Exchange server.

    The successor

"The successor to Exchange Server 2019, Exchange Server SE"

"We have committed to Exchange Server CU15 being the 'code equivalent' to Exchange Subscription Edition (SE) RTM release"

Successor equates to..... change in licencing model.

Yeah, a new licensing model which will be more profitable for Microsoft...
