back to article Singapore says Nvidia's astounding local sales don't mean it's the source of DeepSeek's GPUs

Nvidia’s quarterly results occasionally raise eyebrows because they report that Singapore is a disproportionately large market for its wares. In a Q3 2025 filing [PDF], for example, the accelerator colossus revealed that Singapore is its second-largest market and accounted for 22 percent of revenue. That’s a very odd result, …

Samsung opportunity: "growth in TV sales by adding AI"

Just what we need, shove that Microsoft ReCall-style panopticon AI right into our throats and tubes and finally make our TVs so smart they can fling an endless stream of unwanted product recommendations at us, nonstop, 'til we either return 'em to the store or die trying, drowned in enshitification!

    What's that Chaebol smoking!?!?!

Re: Samsung opportunity: "growth in TV sales by adding AI"

Interesting - recently purchased a new TV. Obviously price was a major factor, but I recall reading on here previously that apparently some (all?) manufacturers saw the opportunity to monetise user data as such an advantage that they would discount TV (bit like with razor blades, were the razor is basically given away)

Chatting to a very helpful shop assistant (Richer Sounds if interested) he advised that it was impossible to set up a Samsung TV without registration (said it drove OAP’s nuts - they just wanted to watch TV)

Came away with a very nice LG OLED TV which didn’t require registration. Obviously it (and my new Yamaha sound bar) are not going to be network connected - prefer to use the OLED as effectively a monitor and utilised a Kodi box for content

So to conclude, in my case Samsung were immediately discounted from my purchase list and that’s even before any suggestion of AI)

We aim to lose by the smallest possible margin …. vote with your wallet/purse folks

    Tesla FSD and bus lanes...

Don't bus lanes work like that in most countries? I know I've seen bus lanes in the UK and Germany that allow all traffic at certain times of the day, but during peak hours they are reserved for buses and bicycles (and depending on the location, taxis)...

More worryingly, Tesla "will deliver “unsupervised FSD in most countries by the end of next year.”

And I can guarantee that in the unlikely event that they put LIDAR back on to their cars and improve their algorythms to the point that they are safe to deploy, they won't have the regulatory approval to do so.

        Don't worry they won't

Musk has been promising this "next year" for a decade now.

If Teslas aren't good enough to read and understand road signs they shouldn't be on the road.

It's not just Teslas either, before I get bombarded with hate. My wife's car decides that the speed limit on a local bypass drops from 70mph to 30mph for a 150m stretch of a dual carriageway because it crosses a slower road. 30mph-signed roads become 20mph roads (with the endless beeping to warn me I'm speeding) because it doesn't understand signs that only apply at certain times.

Her last one was confused by a dirty sign and every day while commuting it'd flash up saying the speed limit was 80- 10mph higher than the highest limit on UK public roads- rather than 30mph. In a residential area that the most dim-witted drunk driver could tell probably didn't have a higher speed limit than the M6.

The ability to maneuver a car doesn't mean that the cars have any understanding of their environment, and until they get this they should not be allowed to drive alone on the road.

You haven't had it flag 110 as the limit yet? Watch that happen when it sees a 110KMh sticker on the back of some other vehicle.......

It would be partially hilarious and partially felonious if people started putting "Speed limit 25" signs on the back of their SUVs then watch all the braking that ensues after they pass certain cars.

Worse is lane assist. A local bit of road here is notoriously bad.

I've driven along it with Assist from Nissan, Audi, VW, Skoda, Ford, Kia and Tesla. ALL of them try and follow the tar-strip that was put down during a repair to the surface, straight into the crash barrier!

Likewise, an offramp further along, the same sort of tar strip, I was driving my daughter's boyfriend's new Skoda RS and as I pulled off the dual-carriageway, the lane assist tried to steer me physically to the grass bank and back down onto the dual-carriageway! I had to physically fight the steering to stop it crashing!

I'll stick to the assist my Qashqai has, it just has a lane departure warning, which beeps but isn't connected to the steering.

"the car has to know what time of day it is"

That sounds very complicated. I wonder how many years of training a neutral net it'll take Tesla to know the time

Next up: Tesla plan to fit an enormous sundial fin on the roof, and a compass.

It is only able to tell the day in the absence of strong magnetic fields, trees, or street lighting. And is still some of the more capable self-driving functionality.

Thats not fair Cybertrucks dont need any help being unstable at speed, imagine a sundial or sail on the top and trying to turn against a wind in an unfavourable direction.

    Weasel words

Singapore is an international business hub. Major US and European companies have significant operations here. Nvidia has explained that many of these customers use their business entities in Singapore to purchase chips for products destined for the US and other Western countries.

[There] is no reason to believe that DeepSeek obtained any export-controlled products from Singapore. We expect US companies, like Nvidia, to comply with US export controls and our domestic legislation.

Our customs and law enforcement agencies will continue to work closely with their US counterparts. We have always upheld the rule of law, and acted decisively and firmly against individuals and companies that flout the rules.

How carefully did the SG government write those three paragraphs? A non-denial denial if ever I read one. They might as well have said "You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment," and left it at that. Whoever wrote that last bit hasn't read the Panama Papers.
