back to article Baguette bandits strike again with ransomware and a side of mockery

Hellcat, the ransomware crew that infected Schneider Electric and demanded $125,000 in baguettes, has aggressively targeted government, education, energy, and other critical industries since it emerged around mid-2024. just enquiring as to what are the legal ramifications of them attacking a Govt account, and then, said Govt goes looking for, finds, and executes them ?

all under the "clear and present danger " use

and IF this would pass muster in legal terms, why haven't they bothered to do so ?

and yes, I am aware that 'OUR' govt 'probably' wouldn't, or at least wouldn't admit to it anyway

still, makes for pleasant thinking :o)

        It's not just that

These outfits are tied up with serious organised crime networks - and already have big targets on their backs

The kingpins are generally living with very healthy doses of paranoia and in the case of Russia/China are effectively state-sanctioned as long as they pay their bribes, whilst NK is doing it as a business

State Actors going after them is an additional threat but violent criminal orgs tend to fight back in less inhibited ways (See: Italian mafia responses to prosecutions)

Hacker: Where is my baguettes pig-dog? Your mother thinks a Mac is a cheese ah burger.

Negotiator: Do you want payment in baguette tokens or baguette bread... wait a minute.. are you French?

Hacker: Of course I am French! Why else would I have this outraaageous accent? Now pay up or I will taunt you a second ah time. [whispering to other hacker] Fetchez la vache.
