back to article Infosec was literally the last item in Trump's policy plan, yet major changes are likely on his watch

The Trump administration came to office this week without a detailed information security policy, but analysis of cabinet nominees’ public remarks and expert comments suggest it will make significant changes in the field. The returned President certainly can’t afford to ignore cybersecurity, given the USA’s critical …

No one likes regulation, but ...

without it organisations will do the minimum, especially if the cost of failure is borne by others - especially if those others are too small to be able to fight back.

Regulation has a cost but it also has benefits.

Too much regulation is bad, too little is bad. There is a balance, but finding it is hard and might only be obvious in retrospect.

Corporations used to do the right thing if the cost was less than the fine.

Now you can just donate to avoid the fine - much more efficient

To fix security you have to fix liability.

In the US and most of the world, courts have decided that the consumer liability for companies with sloppy IT security is basically zero.

I mean, it's not *exactly* zero, but close enough.

If this was set to a more appropriate number, behavior would change very rapidly.

How long before the apparently common practise of "swatting", that is to say calling law enforcement down onto a supposed enemy, extends to the Internet?

Sooner or later someone's going to try spoofing tactics to get the Trump-o-zapper aimed in the direction of their choice.
