back to article Apple reportedly building AI server processor with help from Broadcom

Apple is reportedly working with chip giant Broadcom to develop a custom server processor to power the AI services and features built into its operating systems. According to The Information, which cites three unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter, the project is codenamed “Baltra” and is expected to enter production in …

    Makes perfect sense that ...

Apple's custom server CPU for AI will be the Raspberry Pi 5 (BCM2712) ... brilliant! Same decision made earlier by OpenAI so no great surprise there since, with only two 'r's, strawberries (which are slightly modded raspberries to ChatGPTs) end up much less filling than apples ... yet terribly delicious (if it weren't for all these little seeds that get stuck between one's teeth)!

The kiloWatts of power going through that easy-bake ultimate oven AI chippery should turn these Pis nice, golden, hot, and crispy, in no time flat ... so yummy! The smell is already overwhelming, mouth-watering, filling the room, intoxicating the mind, ... I want one, right now ... and don't you too!? Yes ... hmmmmm ... yum!

I do. Very lovely machines in the MS-DOS days, very much failed to make the transition to full PC compatibility, then utterly botched MCA. Which is a shame, because they got so much so very right - their portable desktop with the keyboard clipped to the bottom and built-in carrying handle was a thing of beauty in the mid '80s. The keyboard with the built-in calculator was also a stroke of genius, in the days before multi-tasking windowing OSs.

It was a fertile, exciting period. The culling of suppliers as we moved into the '90s was quite brutal.

Apple taking advantage of existing technologies rather than reinventing the wheel

When have they done anything else?

Despite what their confused users think Apple invent nothing.

One of these days, they are going to attempt to register the the wheel - or may be they already have attempted that

They are very, very good at being second to market, and have made an awful lot of money as a result.

Re: Apple taking advantage of existing technologies rather than reinventing the wheel

Being second and learning from the mistakes of the first to market and often improving on the Mk 1.0 version has made them and their stockholders a lot of money over the years.

Their R&D budget is huge. We never get to hear about the projects that fail apart from the mythical Apple Car.

From what I've seen, they have improved on the core ARM Cpu quite a bit (as allowed by the terms on their license). The evolution of Apple Silicon took over a decade and a lot of investment cash.

They made a PC on a chip work so well that others (Qualcomm and Broadcom etc) were left scrambling.

I don't own and have never owned APPL stock so have no vested interest in the company. I do use a 2018 MacBook Pro(Intel i7 CPU) but it runs Linux not MacOS.
