American memory vendor Micron will receive $6.1 billion in CHIPS Act funding under a deal finalized by the US Commerce Department on Tuesday. The funding, first teased in April, pulls from the $39 billion in CHIPS cash set aside to support the development of domestic fabs. In the case of Micron, the subsidies will support the …

I would argue trade deficit…. but most of these chips will be exported to China, India, Vietnam, Turkey etc and reimported back incorporated as finished goods - with all new tariffs - as Global Capitalism/Bean-counting/MBA also offshored general manufacturing (and support and services) to cheap and chips to Taiwan/South Korea/Ireland.

        ThinkPad

My current ThinkPad - Lenovo, formerly IBM - was made in China.

My first one was made @ IBM Greenock.

        That’s the manufacturing problem.

          Re: ThinkPad

THe made in label does not actually say where the CPU or any of the chips are made.

Even if the CPU or any of the other supporting chips were made in the USA, if its assembled in Vietnam, the made in sticker would not say USA.

The subsidies are for 6.1 billion, so for 20,000 projected jobs that's "only" $305,000 per job that the government is spending on this corporate welfare.

        Plus 25% tax offset.

But is it ONLY 6.1B ?

We all know the dollar number will only increase, there will be more begging and gifts from fed or local government, and the promised job count will also fall.
