back to article Claims of 'open' AIs are often open lies, research argues

Rhetoric around "open" AI concentrates power in the AI sector rather than making it more open to competition and scrutiny, according to a research paper published in Nature. The research sets out how the often-promoted concept of "open" AI can mislead the public and policy-makers, leading to a false sense of security. "Claims …

Congratulations to both the author and editor

We got every variant: "open" AI, 'open' AI, "open ai" and even open AI, but the only companies mentioned are IBM, Google, Meta and Amazon - along with EleutherAI. Well done.

All this so called technology is fully open

Open to abuse, open to exploitation, open to attack, open to failure, open to manipulation, open to fraudulent claims

All this so called 'A.I.' is about is stealing everyone's data...

And making money selling it back to them...

    The company is a lie

It isn't just 'open' that's a lie, it's their entire name. There is nothing Open or Intelligent about OpenAI leaving us with the only truth... Sam Alt-Man is Artificial.

      Artificial?

There's nothing Art-y about it either.

All that's left is something that sounds Fishy.

In fairness, while some large enterprises do contribute as required to open source, a lot do just take from it, or even use it as a marketing opportunity (as most AI startups seem to).

    Open lies?

Why am I not surprised that the openness of open AIs are lies, when the AI itself lies.

I asked ChatGPT+ how many books I have written. It lied, but then again, should I press my case for all the unpaid royalties I seem to be owed?

      Re: Open lies?

      Try something like this:

1.Travel as far away from your home area as possible without being detected or using any form of transport that tracks you. No electronic devices at all.

      2. Don't leave any history of your intentions to do #1 through search/AI/anything digital. Probably better to do everything in your power in the lead up to #1 to suggest you are doing the opposite.but don't be too obvious. Don't make any pattern that suggests your intention or counter intention.

      3. Access ChatGPT at #1 place by some means that doesn't link you - nearly impossible. I've no idea how you could do that ATM.

      4. Don't directly ask it the question. Don't use a register or syntax that can be linked to you or anybody you have met since about 1996.

      5. You might get the answer you need.

The above isn't surefire. Just the first thing I could think of that might work but the chances of even achieving #1 is near impossible so I don't hold out much hope

    The galaxy is open

All of outer space is open, that doesn't make you its master.

This is kind of why I've never been into open source. I've done vendor development, big fat apps, systems level stuff. Then I've gone out in the field and seen what happens when users have access to source. ROFLMAO. OK, sometimes good stuff happens, but it's very rare.

But when it comes to these big LLMs there are just oodles of obscure, unsettled stuff, and I'll just betcha all the good stuff is still proprietary, the open stuff is a decade behind.

And unless you have access to 1000 GPU cluster or better and unlimited time on it, you're likely shut out of any significant progress. All that "scale, scale, scale" jive from OpenAI, right?
