back to article LLNL's El Capitan surpasses Frontier with 1.74 exaFLOPS performance

Lawrence Livermore National Lab's (LLNL) El Capitan system has ended Frontier's 2.5-year reign as the number one ranked supercomputer on the Top500, setting a new high water mark for high-performance computing (HPC). At 1.74 exaFLOPS of double precision performance as measured by the venerable Linpack (HPL) benchmark, the …

    What? All those exaflops?

And they're not doing critical work to train some statistical idiot, er, sorry, I mean of course AI...

    China

Has China fallen off the chart? Or are they just not advertising what they have any more? Which is much easier now that they are using home-grown silicon rather than buying from Intel or AMD (which has become rather difficult for them of late)

      Re: China

China started its own top100 list which seems to have been last updated at the end of last year. The top 3 machines there run at 488, 208 and 125 PF/s, and are not listed in Top500. The 4th machine, at 93 PF/s, is the Sunway TaihuLight that is #15 in the latest Top500. Their ExaFlop machines, however, don't seem to be explicitly listed anywhere.

      Re: Supercomputers

According to https://www.researchgate.net/publication/359171179_Cray_1_Supercomputer_Performance_Comparisons_With_Home_Computers_Phones_and_Tablets a mid range 2021 laptop is between 226 and 2671 times faster than the Cray 1 from 12 comparisons, dependent on the particular application. The 2020 Raspberry Pi produced gains between 25 and 400 times, and a 2020 phone about twice that.

They lack class. No benches. Not round. Not hand-wired.

Can it also be used to calculate why the British Trident missile just went pffft on launch?
