Paper works well
I have two passports and always pick the best one at a border, visiting the UK means I show my UK passport but visiting any country in the EU means I show them my US passport and just keep walking in. And visiting Brazil means that the UK passport is easy so the US passport stays in my pocket.
Selecting the best physical passport for each country make traveling so easy - every time the officials just take a quick look at the paper passport, no digital data checking is much faster and easy but I always shave before I visit a new country.

Re: The official withdrawal was when?
There's not a single mention of the EU in this article, and the UK was never a Schengen member anyway, so this isn't an EU-related issue. The UK borders are for the most part air&sea so deal with travellers from all over the world. The only land border the UK has is with Ireland, where the CTA makes it a special case anyway.
