Oh noes. Hackers hacked the hacking system the government ordered to be installed. I remember many a discussion on these very pages about how government mandated back doors and surveillance are not a good idea. Who knew this would happen? Who could have foreseen this? When will these questions be answered or even asked?

    El Reg hits the mainstream!

Referenced at note 2 to Wikipedia's Salt Typhoon entry. Congrats!

Except ....let's get our facts straight - whoever "they" are is "reported" (we are not told by whom) to be operated by the Chinese Government.

And - chuckle - Salt Typhoon is what "they" are called by Microsoft. Others use different names.

Glad that's all settled and we know exactly with whom we are dealing - well, sort of. After all, The Register said it.

    Governments asked for this

By requiring every company that delivers private communications to be able to disclose these communications on demand, states force the vendor installation of exploitable vulnerabilities. End to end encryption becomes meaningless. Telegram, while appearing to resist this kind of exposure, is banned by authoritarian governments.
