back to article WhatsApp may expose the OS you use to run it – which could expose you to crooks

An analysis of Meta's WhatsApp messaging software reveals that it may expose which operating system a user is running, and their device setup information – including the number of linked devices. That analysis comes from security researchers at cryptocurrency wallet maker Zengo, who previously found a security weakness in the …

stopped using these crooks for non business use years ago!

for business use... been freeloading for ages ... fair game ... use and abuse :)

for my penance (and satisfaction) i run this on an el cheapo ionos vm .... https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-TLS-Proxy

    doing my bit :)

PS another upside .... in this vacuos social media world ..... you soon find who ur real friends are .... they will just install signal or ask you to install it for them, others end up using the freeloading business account (and so mostly ignored unless they are usefull)

      Real friends...

Don't ask you to install an app just for the privilege to be able to talk to them...

In my experience, real friends will make every effort to stay in touch with you, and if that means using a different app will do so. Fake friends will just complain 'but you're not on facebook' as justification for not bothering and being lazy and unwilling to suffer an inconvenience. When I left facebook 12 yrs ago... I soon found that out. I have 2 friends left out of all of them.

Installing a more secure app for your more privacy & security concious friends, is for their benefit too.

But never underestimate how lazy people are and unwilling to suffer any tiny inconvenience that doesn't conform/align with their demands.

lol, you just proved the opposite of your statement. if they were your friends you wouldn't have abandoned them and would use the app that THEY use. but you insist they use the app you want. Sounds pretty one sided.

On the reality side, if you end up with 5 good friends by time you die, you did well. Anyone that says use this app or you aren't my friend - never was.

Exactly! Just because *you* don’t want to drink and drive, doesn’t mean I should be stopped from doing so! It’s so one sided, shut up and get in the car, you baby.

I know you're just trolling for trolling sake.

If some one comes up to you and says, Hey, I find that particular platform toxic, full of hate and vile content and will be deleting my account because it's harmful to my mental health and well being. Here's the platforms I'll be using for messaging and staying in touch and links to find them on apple/google app stores.

Your attitude is respond to with 'fuck you, you must stay here and damage your well being or you don't deserve my friendship'

A friend will make the effort, a fake friend will not... a friend cares about their friends well being, a fake one does not.

All you've proven is that you're a fake.

of my real friends just laughed when I told them 'I don't do social media'.

One commented.... 'That's you all over. You are an ornery SOB'.

A few dropped me but almost all of those who stuck with me have either done the same as me and got off the social media addiction or have drastically cut their use of it.

Join the revolution and get the hell off Social Media.

Well said Harrys. Not sure why you've been downvoted, or which type of snowflake you've offended.

Putting in some effort to avoid mass fingerprinting and profiling (for the globalist to target you with this weeks messaging to brainwash the hard of thinking) seems a very sensible idea.

      De-googling, meta'ing, ms'ing and appling seems like a good start. <best braveheart voice> "freeeeeeedooom"</>

    Facts, not scare stories

    > someone trying to spread malware through WhatsApp

This article is all supposition ( ... may ... ... could ... ) but short on facts and specifics.

Is there any actual Whatsapp malware (assuming nobody is daft enough to use a fake Whatsapp app). Considering it is end-to-end encrypted, I would love to know how someone could inject malware into the circuit - short of sending an attachment from a legitimate Whatsapp account.

And if they did put a payload in an attachment, why bother targeting just one specific platform?

"...which could expose you to crooks..."

    Really?

    Define "crooks"!!

So...this weakness "could expose you to the NSA, GCHQ and various other Five Eyes snoops".

Ah....but then El Reg is a known supporter of the so-called "good guys". Bad journalism!

    Stop unknown contacts

Should have an option to auto block unknown contacts.

If you are not a contact of mine then I do not know you and do not want to engage with you at all in anything. Once I know who you are and have your number you are added to a contact list.

If you are starred, you can ring me

If you are not starred and ring me, I will see and I may get back to you

If you are not in my contact list, leave a message and hope I listen to it as otherwise I will ignore you.

Private / Withheld calls - never bother with

    A mote in your eye

I'm so glad that the makers of cryptocurrency wallets, which have an absolutely stellar record for security, now have time to find problems in Meta apps.

Almost as bad as Microsoft dedicating teams to look for Google security issues.

I bailed on WhatsApp as soon as Meta took over. Moved to Signal and chuck them a fiver a month for their troubles.I had already exited from Facebook some time prior.

My partner moved with me and dragged most of his family and friends too. A few of my friends came over too and those that didn't are contactable via other means.

Sadly, I have been unsuccessful in getting off Instagram, which is probably much, much worse than WhatsApp. It's a shame that no-one uses Vero. Or, should I say, no-one I know uses Vero.
