back to article China again claims Volt Typhoon cyber-attack crew was invented by the US to discredit it

Chinese authorities have published another set of allegations that assert the Volt Typhoon cyber-crew is an invention of the US and its allies, and not a crew run by Beijing. Published on Monday in five languages, a document titled "Lie to Me: Volt Typhoon III – Unravelling Cyberespionage and Disinformation Operations …

      Kim Jong, too!

No, you don't write it Kim Jong two, you write it Kim Jong Il. But that's the previous one. The current one is Kim Jong Un. The next one will be Kim Jong Zero.

I've seen Godzilla Minus One - which was excellent - so does that mean that the North Korean leader after next is actually going to do a good job?

Maybe we should do what China has done in the past, re-direct BGP traffic and when the number of attacks just disappears, ask them to please explain how that managed to happen?

    You have been warned.

And if the marsupials were involved, it would be cyclones, not hurricanes.

      MariaDB [(none)]> DROP BEARS;

ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MariaDB server for the right syntax to use near 'bears' at line 1

I never did work out the right syntax to use near 'bears', I was running too fast.

Quite ironic that CrowdStrike have probably caused more damage and disruption than the Chinese in recent years.

    1. druck Silver badge

Hardly. Crowdstrike was a few hours of downtime and some inconvenience, where as China has wholesale syphoned commercial data from tens of thousands of companies, and the entire personnel records for US government departments.

    so funny.

"But they're well off the mark criticizing koalas, as the marsupial's name is derived from the language of Australia's Dharug people and is not Anglo-Saxon at all. Further, koalas are almost entirely placid and spend most of their lives sleeping or chewing leaves. They're a terrible metaphor for anything other than languor - as are pandas."

    hahahahahahahahahhahah........

"spend most of their lives sleeping or chewing leaves"

And peeing on politicians seeking a photo opportunity.

"koalas are almost entirely placid and spend most of their lives sleeping or chewing leaves. They're a terrible metaphor for anything other than languor" ... I imagine could equally be applied to most politicians.

In any case naming these groups and their malware using a systematic taxonomy makes a great more sense than the current meaningless headline grabbing practice as I think a senior CISA official recently remarked.

    Stop

    Thou dost protest too much...!

An awful lot of denial going on here.

Perhaps they should do the "We can neither confirm, nor deny the blah, blah, blah"?

Denials by anyone are not really very plausible. We know with certainty that the US engage in cyber attacks on a massive scale (including on supposed "allies"), it would be very surprising therefore if the Chinese were not equally active. Even if "Volt Typhoon" is fiction, Chinese intelligence must be doing something, because that's what big powers do.

It's not just those two either, recent inquiries in Canada have found that countries like India and Saudi Arabia have very "robust" (extending all the way to assassination) operations in Western countries such as Canada, and may be a greater threat in that respect than China or Russia (or the US). The assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul was preceded by Saudi cyber attacks on his associates in Canada to gain knowledge of his plans and movements. Indian intelligence have been engaged in a campaign of political murder, coercion, and extortion in Canada, and cyber attacks originating in India are accompanying that.

For the vast majority of the world who don't live in one of these countries, you're going to get hacked by all sides. There are no "friends" when it comes to things like this. Your government aren't going to do anything either because they can't afford to alienate major powers or because those countries are simply going to ignore their complaints anyway.

The only realistic approach for you as a non-spy is to assume that you are going to be a target of everyone and to take security seriously. I won't bother detailing what needs to be done with respect to security, people know what needs to be done, they just stick their heads in the sand and find excuses not to do it.

"We know with certainty that the US engage in cyber attacks on a massive scale (including on supposed 'allies')" You know that how?
