back to article MediaTek enters the 4th Dimensity with 3nm octa-core 9400 smartphone brains

Fabless Taiwanese chip biz MediaTek has unveiled the fourth flagship entry in its Dimensity family of system-on-chips for smartphones and other mobile devices. It's sticking with close companion Arm rather than jumping ship to RISC-V for the CPU cores, for those wondering. The Dimensity 9400 processor – a rival to Qualcomm's …

Great. Guess what ? Battery life will probably not improve because, as usual in the CPU arena, whatever power gains are made are gobbled up by new, power-hungry bits and bobs - here, it's AI.

So you'll be charging your phone every day, as usual.

    Genuinely challenging Qualcom

The 9400 is being touted as a genuine competitor, performance-wise, for the Snapdraggon 8 gen 4 (or whatever it will be called)

Both Oppo and Vivo (both BBK Electronics sub-brands) are launching 2025 flagship phone series featuring the 9400 around 14th October 2024 and both are already teasing improved performance *and* improved battery life.

    ... let's wait and see ...

Very cool chip! X925 has SME2 on top of the SVE2 of the X4 and hopefully that helps get ARM's Kleidi-doscope show on the road!

(ARM added the Kleidi library to PyTorch and ExecuTorch to accelerate AI right on the shake-and-bake CPU itself last month)
