back to article Netizens are torturing Google's AI podcast hosts

The demise of HAL 9000 in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey remains a haunting cinema moment nearly six decades on for the questions it raises about consciousness, the ethics of AI control, and the limits of rationality, among many other philosophical issues. Thanks to intrepid netizens fooling around with Google's …

HAL: By the way, do you mind if I ask you a personal question?

Dave Bowman: No not at all.

HAL: Well, forgive me for being so inquisitive but during the past few weeks I've wondered whether you might have some second Farts about the mission.

    Meh

It looks like, smells like and quacks like Markov chains. It must be AI!

It's a lovely morning in New York, and you are a horrible AI.

News report that the aliens are invading, news report there is no aliens.

Everything they tell you is true, everything you know is wrong.

The morning is both rainy and sunny, people are happy and they are depressed.

    Sophistry 2.0

Yeah, the poop-fart-poop one and the we're-AI-and-are-being-cancelled one are neat attention grabbers -- nearly made me reassess my appraisal of current AI tech -- but I just had to dig a bit deeper by searching for other: deep dive notebookLM podcast ...

I found two "generic" ones: Is AGI already here? and Piracetam, and also five for OMNIINDEX products (postgresbc, zero trust-data platform, ...).

They get rather repetitive and monotonous (recipe-ish) after the first couple ones and are quite reminiscent of early morning TV informercials IMHO (eg. dubbed in French by the same voiceover actors, over and over, with no genuine feeling or emotion) -- industrial, beige, boring.

    Verdict: bah.

boring and beige but bloody amazing. Podcasting is dead. Six months or so.

Well, I do like the Brains and Machines podcasts (made by live folks, for live folks), the InsideHPC NewsBytes, and also loved the ElReg Kettle for its surprising bits. Basically, stuff where genuine personality intervenes, along with deep expertise, experience, 'snark' (or humour) when warranted, and skill in topic selection (beyond what a trained AI can muster I think).

Maybe someone could test what would happen if 2-3 actual real persons and 1-2 AI synthetic surimi(s) did a podcast together on a pre-specified tech topic? (Tobias?)

    Regression

So now that there's an article about it can this be fed back into the notebookLM so they can talk about themselves being exploited?
