Artificial intelligence may have shown the would-be-leader of the free world who's really in charge, after rogue robo-taxis halted the motorcade of US vice-president – and Democratic Party presidential candidate – Kamala Harris. ABC7 News Bay Area reported that as Harris's motorcade passed through San Francisco on Friday night …

The beginning of a robot uprising

I think you'll find that began when the "social" networking algorithms figured out how to incite physical human conflict. Bolshie cars are just a bit of additional softening up.

I think we're safe in the UK until there's sufficiently widespread adoption of the "smart" kettle to permit an all-out assault on teatime.

But there was a new wrinkle this time. It asked me to click on crosswalks. I wasn't sure how to determine how angry any particular pedestrian in such a small picture was... So I clicked on a pedestrian crossing, and the picture instantly disappeared to be replaced by another picture of an amost identical crossing. Clicked on that - got a picture of a motorway bridge. Clicked on one of the other panels - it got replaced with another crossing. I know I'm already providing free labour for Google - but this new trend is taking the piss. If I see another like that, I'm just resorting to random clicking. I haven't got all week.

Fair enough, but remember that the same thing happens for a different set of readers if the term "zebra crossing" is used. I don't know of any wording that would be truly international.

(Incidentally, the first time I ever encountered the zebra crossing phrase was in the works of Douglas Adams. As a youngster in the USA, I developed a mental picture rather different, and possibly even more humorous, than the one the author intended to create.)

The funny thing is, most non-American English speakers can usually cope quite well with translating into proper English. I've encountered Prime Minister motorcades a few times on the M40/A40 back when Theresa May and later Boris Johnson used to travel that way regularly.

The Prime Minister's car is black with blue flashing lights on the front gril. Then there's police motorcyclists running ahead and behind. You see those first.

A normal police motorcyclist travelling to an emergency, you just need to pull over enough to let them past, usually you don't need to switch lanes. The outriders in a motorcade, you do need to switch lanes, and they will make hand signals to indicate this.

They might be slow, but the spacing will be spot on. Priorities.

Military vehicles can be a real B to drive. I know somebody that has a few and they are so primitive it boggles the mind. I can get in a commercial heavy truck from the same year and drive much more easily and comfortably. I expect the cost to purchase the commercial vehicle was far less money as well. I do understand that military vehicles have to cost more as the government won't cut loose with the money for them in under 6 months and commercial vehicles are paid for at the time of purchase (by the finance company most often).

        3. Peter Gathercole Silver badge

I was travelling along the M4 in South Wales one time that there was an international governmental event at Celtic Manor, and came across a couple of motorcades, probably carrying heads of state or other such high-up.

I was fascinated by the rotating police morotcycle escort. They would pass it slowly, travelling up the lane outside of the motorcade, then pull in to the hard-sholder (for people not in the UK, this is an unused lane intended for breakdowns to get them off the carriageway) and wait for the motorcade to pass, then pull up to the back again and repeat.

With several police motorcyclists doing this, plus another couple permanently guarding the front and rear of the motorcade, they were able to keep other traffic out of the lanes next to the motorcade itself.

I had never considered such tactics, but in retrospect, they make a lot of sense.

The closer you live to a major city, the more chances you have to encounter these disruptions. In the US it's the season where large corporations purchase elected officials through "campaign contributions" and the official being bought facilitates this through "fund raising dinners" where those corporate representatives have the chance to whisper in the ear completely off the record about what they expect to receive in compensation for the "donation". This involves lots of "dinners" and driving from one function to the next. Traffic snarled a right mess and a bitch to make any flight plans too.

      2. MachDiamond Silver badge

"I've never encountered a Presidential motorcade, but isn't it just a sub-case of flashing emergency vehicle lights?"

It's a subset of any situation where you'd have a road closed with an person (often a police officer) directing/holding traffic. Could be a funeral procession, a heavy construction vehicle crossing the road, a duck family and all sorts of other things. I don't suppose that SF has many/any places where duck might cross, but it would look really bad for Waymo if there were and one of their cars flattened a bunch of ducklings. It might be somebody trying to flag down cars due to a sink hole or other serious roadway damage. You wouldn't want to be in the back of a Johnny Cab that goes sailing off a collapsed bridge or piece of road that has washed out due to a water main break.

Same as it's been for ages. It's the handlers, consultants and image experts. It's been shown recently that it isn't the Presidential Cabinet. Maybe it's Dr. Jill. It's not Congress. AOC embarrassed herself again in calling for the abolition of the US Supreme Court for being "unnecessary". When she was first elected (who knows how), she knew nothing about the structure of the US government. She still seems to be very unclear about a great many things most children had to learn in school. It's been some time since I escaped the institutions and I can still remember quite a lot of what we were taught in Civics classes. Of course, this was long before we had to know about CRT, DIE, etc so it was much less confusing.

Instead when covid hit the left cried because he wouldnt be an authoritarian.

Trump bowed the pressure fro warjhawks to tear up the Iran deal.

He ended up overseeing a massive U.S. military buildup in the Middle East during his term and nearly went to war with Iran.

                    Also, quoting JD Vance:

""A lot of people recognize that we need to do something with Iran—but not these weak little bombing runs," Vance said in a Fox News interview at the Republican National Convention on Monday. "If you're going to punch the Iranians, you punch them hard, and that's what [Trump] did when he took out [Iranian Gen. Qassem] Soleimani."

Vance praised Trump for trying to "enable the Israelis and the Sunni Arab states" to fight back against Iran. In a speech to the Quincy Institute in May, Vance tried to sell a U.S.-Israeli-Arab alliance as a way for the United States to "spend less time and less resources in the Middle East."

Matt Duss, the executive vice president at the Center for International Policy wrote:

These pieces all rest heavily on the claim that Trump launched no new wars. That’s true as far as it goes. But it was certainly not for lack of trying. Trump might not have started any wars, but he massively inflamed existing ones—and came close to catastrophic new ones.

Let’s review the record. Despite inveighing against “endless wars,” Trump massively escalated the country’s existing wars in multiple theaters, leading to skyrocketing casualties. In Afghanistan, he substantially upped the amount of airstrikes, leading to a 330 percent increase in civilian deaths. In Yemen, he escalated both U.S. counterterrorism activities and support for the devastating Saudi-led war against the Houthis. According to the United Kingdom’s Bureau of Investigative Journalism, there were 2,243 drone strikes in just the first two years of Trump’s presidency, compared with 1,878 in the entire eight years of the Obama administration.

"Trump bowed the pressure fro warjhawks to tear up the Iran deal."

I dont remember Trump going to war with Iran, when was that? He did tear up a bad deal the Iranians were exploiting. If that is a concern however why would Biden unfreeze a load of Iranian money?

"He ended up overseeing a massive U.S. military buildup in the Middle East during his term and nearly went to war with Iran."

So no war with Iran. And crippled ISIS. And prepared to take the US out of Afghanistan.

                      "Also, quoting JD Vance:"

And what is wrong with that? You dont want the US to go to war in Iran do you?

That’s true as far as it goes.. He can cry in his mug all he likes but his first line trips him up. The crying that follows is ending of wars instead of a prolonged forever war. Dont like it dont war.

I think due to this being an international forum that people not in the US see the more sensationalist "news" regarding the candidates.

There hasn't been many candidates in the last several decades that have been worth voting FOR, but plenty worth voting AGAINST. It's a sad state of affairs. Not even the non-mainstream political parties have been able to field a candidate worth their salt. I know as I've looked and when I read their platforms and statements, I immediately think "whackadoodle". I'd think that one of them would be in a great position to field somebody with centrist views for the most part that has all their teeth, good hair and can speak grammatically. I'm saddened not to see that. The main two parties have sunk so far below the surface that all they can come up with is the anaerobic bacteria growing in the mud that reeks when brought above the waterline and into the light.

Clearly you've not listened to any of the words Trump has said over the last year. I'm not surprised, they are rambling and extremely hard to follow.

He intends to be a dictator-for-life. He's said so repeatedly, and has been given carte blanche by the Supreme court to do so.

Of course, Trump is rather ill, is clearly in terminal mental decline as he can no longer string coherent words together, and is not particularly likely to survive four years, which would leave Vance with the absolute power granted by Roberts.

              @Richard 12

"He intends to be a dictator-for-life."

When did he say so? What did he say?

"given carte blanche by the Supreme court to do so."

Has he? I know the Supreme court had to explain the executive is the President which has always been the case but the various lawfare against Trump needed to ignore that. Also Biden defied the Supreme court which defined his student loan forgiveness as illegal, and then he did it again anyway. And no, the 3 branches of government exist to keep the others in check which is why there was legitimate concern when Biden and the dems considered court packing.

"Of course, Trump is rather ill, is clearly in terminal mental decline as he can no longer string coherent words together"

This is not a disqualifying point according to the Dems and Harris. Remember that Biden was called for his mental decline before he got elected and during his presidency. After the poor debate where everyone saw it on stage suddenly everyone knew Biden was in mental decline and all covered for him. Even now Harris is not doing her duty of taking over from Biden. But also you know you are spouting bull because Biden is in such decline while Trump is still out and about campaigning AND beating down the lawfare efforts. Not something mental decline would allow.

"not particularly likely to survive four years, which would leave Vance with the absolute power granted by Roberts."

This is in the realm of stupidity as Biden was all set to run again and in his now very publicly known state. And even in such a state Harris never took over so are you saying Vance would take his duty seriously while Harris hasnt?

"Your country stands on the brink of an abyss, and has the capability to drag the rest of the world with it."

Not quite, I live in the UK. I get to watch them stand on that abyss and hope they dont vote 4 more years heading into it.

              "Terminate the Constitution"

              "Execute generals"

I live in the UK. So it is possible I dont know what is going on over there. I do read news from around the world but dont assume to know everything which is why I ask questions.

"Ever heard of Project 2025? And don't come out with "Trump knows nothing about it". 90% of his staff are responsible for it."

Except there is no reason to think it has anything to do with Trump. I know the dems keep trying to pin it on Trump and claim he was somehow involved but it honestly sounds like another lie.

Thats a bit of a list to go one by one so-

"Post-election "bloodbath" and ""Dictator" for a day"

Both of those were debunked by reading what he actually said.

""Nobody better" than Hungarian strongman Viktor Orbán"

As Hillary found by calling people deplorable, mean comments only make them like you less. Considering Trump is willing to talk to other ELECTED LEADERS he doesnt go and make his job harder. Kinda like when he said nice things about Kim Jong but still made it clear he would wipe N.Korea off the map if he mistook it for weakness.

""Infested countries", "Immigrants are "animals"" and "The Great Replacement "conspiracy"

I would love to know what he actually said for these. I think I heard of the replacement conspiracy, is that the one about fraudulent ballots from illegals? If so isnt there a lot of resistance to implementing safeguards around this, considering it never happens?

              "Execute generals"

Trump hasnt executed any has he? Or do you mean strikes against terrorists?

""Lock up" political enemies" and "Root out "vermin" and the "threat from within""

Do you mean go after the various corrupt and criminal? I would think so too. Hell the current sitting president wont even be prosecuted because of his mental state for doing worse than Trump (classified documents but without the legal authority to have them).

              "Terminate the Constitution"

Did he actually say that? Was it in the context of the 2020 election... oddities? The Georgia case was based on that wasnt it? The one run by that corrupt woman and her cheating lover? The case that ran into problems because Trump is the executive and it is his duty to ensure free and fair elections. I like how people act like 2020 was squeaky clean (but not 2016 obviously) and yet at the time a good portion of democrat voters didnt believe the result was honest.
