back to article Microsoft says it broke some Windows 10 patching – as it fixes flaws under attack

Another Patch Tuesday has dawned, as usual with the unpleasant news that there are pressing security weaknesses and blunders to address. Microsoft issued fixes for more than 70 flaws affecting various components of its products including Windows, Office and its Mark of the Web mechanism, Azure, Dynamics Business Central, SQL …

    MS Borks an update?

    Not news. Move along there.

Seriously folks... IT Pro's have been telling the Borg (aka Microsoft) that their update process sucks for well over 20 years yet, and in true Borg fashion, they do nothing about it.

Give MS the finger people and move away before your systems get totally borked by the Borg.

its worse than that. If a servicing stack update exists, Windows will install everything else first, and the install the servicing stack update after the reboot after you check for updates again. You do check for updates again, right?

Yes, I do, and I find it can often take 3 or 4 reboot cycles to get everything updated.

I can hear from the whine of laptop fans in our office when it's patch Tuesday.

I wonder how many gigawatts of power this inefficient update engine consumes every month?

On the plus side, for a moment there will be barely any bandwidth left for spam..

I suspect that pr*n will still find its way past, however.

We have a group policy that holds updates back for at least a week so that the reports from the suckers worldwide betatesters can come in.

FWIW this bootloop bork looks close enough to the Crowdstrike SNAFU to warrant more than usual outrage and yet I don't hear the same kind of calls for law suits, which we know would be useless against Microsoft, even though this sounds like the kind of wraparound bug that they should be able to catch through static code analysis.

Microsoft says it broke Windows 10

Update: these morons nuked my laptop yesterday with their latest "update." 3 fucking hours later it staggered back to life. First question is why do I need some picture in the bottom left search bar?

I seriously think MS has a strategy to kill windows 10 by update hell and their main strategy is to get rid of any non enterprise windows client and shunt the proles onto anything not windows, as it's too much hassle to maintain.

    Interns

Windows development is handled by interns and $6 an hour Indians. Microsoft isn't serious about Windows development anymore only adding features that will improve its bottom-line and stock price (like the dreaded A.I.). The attack surface is therefore getting larger and larger. Nothing ever gets removed because no one knows if it will break things.

The knowledgeable people have all been transferred to other projects, most likely A.I. and Azure.

      Re: Interns

I think Azure is also maintained by the Oompah-Loompahs judging by the frequency of breaking changes.

20 years ago I was approached for a Test Analyst contract at Microsoft UK.

I attended an interview and MS offered me the role.

The rates were nearly 30% lower than I was currently receiving and the ever-helpful (!) agent told me I should take it because it would look good on my CV.

I refused because I preferred to earn my true market rate, but to me this shows the quality of people MS are willing to pay for.

And it's now clear it would have done just the opposite for your CV.

The only knowledgeable people MS has are sales and marketing people, aka lobbyists and liars.

        Re: Interns

Yeah right. And you think that something like Windows pops-up organically all by itself? There's a huge amount of engineering involved in many of Microsoft's products, but there's just not enough talent to go around and maintain these properly.

Nah, it breaks itself. The other OS being taken out is just collateral damage.

Having dealt with Lotus it's now a case of "Windows ain't done till Linux won't run.".

    Everyone

Everyone, and I mean everyone (Businesses and personal users) really need to look to alternatives to Windows if at all possible. Microsoft is a total JOKE. Updates come thick and fast, without testing, because they just don't care about anything other than the next new, shiny thing.

      No, jokes are funny.

      Re: Everyone

Businesses will happily tell you that for many tasks there is no real alternative. They will also tell you that migration will be complicated and expensive and, if they can't find a "reasoanble" alternative for Office, especially Outlook, that the drones are happy with, they won't do it.

Fortunately, server-side is where most of the work needs to be done and can be done with the fewest side-effects.
