back to article OpenAI kills Iranian accounts using ChatGPT to write US election disinfo

OpenAI has banned ChatGPT accounts linked to an Iranian crew suspected of spreading fake news on social media sites about the upcoming US presidential campaign. The accounts, we're told, used ChatGPT to generate long-form articles to share on social media platforms, as well as short social comments about both candidates …

The problem any AI is going to have spreading disinformation in the US election is that they will be competing with Musk and Trump

In fact it maybe an useful test of sentience when the LLM just returns "bugger this, you lot are jus toot crazy, I'm going back to creating 12 fingered porn pics"

The internet was originally created to share information, now upgraded with AI (not just Also Iran) it is sharing disinformation worldwide. So many companies are making money worldwide while updating everything but we're all seeing more malware, spam and disinformation all the time these days.

Basically we need a totally new and much safer IDEA - Internet Data Environment Access needs a new and much safer changed improvement.

    Disinfo? We've got plenty, thanks1

I know there are people out there who's jobs depend on finding the Threat Du Jour but, seriously, what on Earth can a typical Iranian come up with that's not already been chewed over and either digested or spat out already? It would have to be (to quote the Frogstar Scout Robot Class 'D') "Something Pretty Damn Devastating".

The biggest threat by far to elections in the US comes from ourselves, from the GoP (Repuiblicans), who despite ample evidence to the contrary are still pushing the crooked election narrative -- filing lawsuits against election officials, purging voter lists, finding new and improved ways to invalidate postal ballots, finding ever more creative ways to make voting more difficult for the untermensch and so on. The efforts are untiring - and are well documented. For all I know planting stories about how Iranians' dark and dirty deeds (or is the Chinese?) are corrupting our elections may be just another plank in their never ending electoral Jenga game.

Incidentally, if you want to see how to 'meddle' in our elections check out our friends at AIPAC.......as ever, the most blatant practitioners aren't hidden in plain sight, they're not even hidden!

    Mission impossible

How on earth can anyone or any system come up with anything more bizarre than the MAGA/Qanon set?

They take creative writing to the stars and beyond.

      Re: Mission impossible

I'll agree that the (notional) Right currently wins in the US bullshit sweepstakes, and has since the rise of right-wing talk radio — something the (notional) Left utterly failed at as the GOP was moving into populism (starting with Reagan, and really gaining steam in the Gingrich era). But it's not like the Democrats don't attempt to peddle plenty of nonsense, and fringe-supposedly-leftist elements like RFK Jr are even worse.

We're just in a moment where the Right(-ish) side of US politics has really invested in the formula of ideological-incoherent populist demagoguery and the Big Lie, while much of the Left continues to try to sound reasonable. (Sound, not necessarily be.) There are points in history where the latter was successful, but its track record here in the last few decades has been mixed at best.

I know where my sympathies lie, but if you pay much attention to any of them it's hard not to hurt yourself with the eye-rolling.
