Users of Cryptonator – an online digital wallet and cryptocurrency exchange – received an unpleasant surprise last weekend after the service was shuttered in a combined operation run by the FBI, the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and German police. Cryptonator allows people to store crypto-coins remotely, transfer funds, …

If you really want to buy an NFT: You can buy NFTs with high quality digital artwork representing the Cologne Cathedral. Construction started in 1248. Any money from sales goes to the cathedral to help either the upkeep, repairs, restoration and so on.

You are not going to make any money (they are not limited editions, every time someone buys one a new one is created) but you know that you contributed to the continued support of a World Heritage building.

It should come as no surprise, is crypto is one big crime facilitator from top to bottom.

Isn't a convicted felon in the US proposing a national cryptocurrency reserve?

"Users of Cryptonator [..] received an unpleasant surprise"

No. They received a wake-up call to reality.

It is high time that funny money got the comeuppance it deserves : world-wide banishment.

There are no crypto exchanges that are reliable. None of them respect anything near banking charters, and all of them are staffed with incompetent idiots who are either waiting for a chance to skip with the money or are waiting for some hacker (or even a normal user) to empty their so-called "vaults" and leave them high and dry.

Funny money is an immense waste of resources and time, and everyone taking part in it is just a potential luser.

So.... what's happened to Roman? Has he been arrested? Has he fled back to Russia? What?

    1. Doctor Syntax Silver badge

Arresting him might have been the German police's role.

    Cash?

They seem hell bent on shutting down crypto because it "could be used for illegal purposes"

In that case why not just pull money from circulation. Its is also used illegally, probably more than any other wealth transfer tool. I mean its the favoured currency of government officials too and those are amongst the most corrupt users of what we call money.

Collecting those ransoms in cash is much less convenient, as is getting payment for sanctions busting. Seriously, the logistics of moving cash can be quite a problem for criminals.
