back to article Malaysia is working on an internet 'kill switch', says minister

Legislation for an internet "kill switch" will reach Malaysia’s Parliament in October, according to the country's minister for Law and Institutional Reform. Minister Azalina Othman Said issued a statement on Sunday detailing that "new legislation that includes provisions regarding the procedure and enforcement of the kill …

The signatories argued that the proposed measures would "stifle" social media and discourage public participation in democracy.

And there's your reason, right there.

Were the signatories social media and advertisers, you'd have a point. In this case they appear to be human right orgs operating in that part of the world.

    Bangladesh and Internet blocks

I am currently on holiday in Bangladesh. We had a complete communications block for a week. No Internet nor SMS. We also had a curfew. This only came about because the government is pretty miffed that the news of what's been happening has been spread about. They have still blocked all social media, while the mobile phone's Internet is extremely limited. No access to any messaging service such as WhatsApp or Signal, nor video websites like YouTube.

Anyway, I have a feeling that this is roughly what they are planning in Malaysia.

Whilst in general Im against this sort of thing, I cant help feeling a targeted off switch against SM platforms might persuade Facetwat etc to behave themselves a little better.

It would also be worth it just to see the look on Space Karen's face when one of his twatty comments causes Xhitter to be shut down in the UK for 24hrs.

C'mon guy, you're an adult! Grow up and act like one. Facetwat, Xhitter.. Juvenile schoolyard crap.

Pretty much can figure out what they want to block given the amount of idiocy the Home Minister did in the past two years (ie banning specific swatch watches, and then recently saying he wants a blockade on programming that normalizes nonbinary gender on streaming sites).

Liars. They promised Internet freedom. Now they're no worse than the corrupt party we voted out twice who wanted the same thing...

Oh wait, they're WITH said corrupt party now...

“The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.

To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it.

To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.”

Well, it's either them, the previous corrupt party who wants the citizens to live in poverty, and an extremist far right Muslim party...

    State censorship.

The internet empowers people. Governments chain them back up. Usually disguised as public safety, national security and protecting kiddies.

      Re: State censorship.

Sadly tho, we voted for them because the only alternatives we had was the corrupt party that ruined the currency and economy of the country (which the winning party so partnered up with after the damn elections anyway much to our anger and disappointment) and a far right extremist party who are vocal Hamas and Taliban supporters, antagonistic to anyone who is not Muslim (for example, ordering restaurants closed during daylight on Ramadan, non-Muslims be damned and wanting to force Shariah law on non-Muslims) and intend to turn Malaysia into a 10th century middle eastern hellhole.

There was a recent well publicized suicide here (Malaysia) attributed to Cyber bullying on social media, that may be the impetus.

    1. RAMChYLD Bronze badge

This is the wrong move. The right move would be to enrich the cybersecurity division of the police force so that they know how to track down cyber bullies and arrest them. Instead they go the stupid route that creates a system that can be abused.

Speaking as someone who has been cyberbullied multple times.

    Kill switch?

Does an "internet kill switch" kill the whole of the internet or just (anti)social media?

Banking transactions (for e.g.) traverse the internet, don't they?

      Re: Kill switch?

The great thing about it is that you don't actually have to know what it can do. Maybe it will be like India's, where it kills all the mobile internet connections because that's what the average person has, but keeps the wired ones so that businesses can still operate. Maybe it will be like China's where individual sites get blocked and attempts to visit get reported. Maybe it will be like the one China uses in Xinjiang which actually turns off all network traffic (presumably except for government and companies that are working with them). Maybe it will be less effective, as with many DNS-based blocking attempts. You don't need to know which one it is, because the entire point of having any of the above is that, if you're unhappy, this can be used to make sure that your unhappiness wouldn't result in any change.

    What have they done?

"When rulers need such extreme security measures, one has to wonder: why is their conscience so heavy? What have they done wrong to dread their own peoples so much?"

      Re: What have they done?

Beats me. But unfortunately, the ruling party itself is actually the best one (that's saying a lot since your only other option is an extreme right party who openly supports the Hamas and the Taliban and their extremist ideologies).
