back to article What does Google Gemini do with your data? Well, it's complicated...

Google, after facing accusations about its AI model ingesting private files, says Gemini can read and summarize this type of sensitive data in real time – but only with Workspace users' express permission.  A Google comms manager has assured The Register "neither that summary nor the doc itself is stored" by Gemini for future …

"neither that summary nor the doc itself is stored"

While I appreciate the sentiment, it would be better to know that "nothing from the document is stored". The phraseology of the statement could allow for some things to be stored.

For some reason I feel somewhat suspicious of this, but maybe I am being a bit paranoid.

....if the code actually behaves the way the guy who wrote it told me it did, and the next guy who fixes that doesn't get it wrong and a google manager doesn't just decide to monetize it all anyway, because our terms and conditions allow us to "store and process your documents" any damn way we feel like it, and this month my bottom line is below the target that gets raised every month automatically and I'm already using contractors in Myanmar, so what else am I going to do to get my bonus?

Reword that " nothing is stored"

Even with consent they should not be using data on this way.

As far as trusting them, a big fat NO!!!!!.

I am not sure any big tech company can be trusted, particularly ones like Google, Meta, Twitter etc.

    why on this...

<$deity>damned earth would you ever open private documents in a telemetry-riddled application? Fucking hell.

    Meh

    Is this news?

My default assumption is that any document uploaded to Google Drive or any other service of a similar nature is that it would never be deleted anyway and would be used in any way the provider wanted to now or any time in the future.

    > that doesn't bode well for normal users, who likely neither have Bankston's technical knowledge nor visibility to get Google's attention when things go wrong.

What technical knowledge? He's a LAW professor!

"Gemini is automatically ingesting even the private docs I open in Google Docs"

Sorry but that is way beyond the pale but sort of what you'd expect which the company who's motto is

"DO EVIL AT ALL TIMES (until we get found out)"

Google anything is banned around here. I always ask potential hires about their use of google. If they enthuse about it, they get shown the door.

We have sensitive trade secret data that we work on for our customers. We never email that data unless it is triple encrypted. Some companies question this but we remind them that we'd be the first ones in the sights of the lawyers should that data get leaked. They soon shut up and accept this.

Android phones are banned unless they are using certified Google Spyware free software. Most of us use iPhones of varying vintage with startpage as the default search engine.

    Go to hell Google.

Oh, and MS is just as bad, if not worse with the news that MS is training AI to read spreadsheets. We are having a discussion later this week on how we can eliminate MS from the company.

    And MS can join them.

Bold of you to assume that Apple are not spying on you too...

      Only triple-encrypted? rolling-of-eyes.

We encrypt 5 times and sprinkle magic fairy dust on each packet before it leaves.

And what's the other one doing?

If the user-facing Gemini is reading and summarizing documents, what's the other one doing?
