back to article FCC slaps Verizon with $1M fine for dropping 911 calls, again

America's Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has fined Verizon a little over a million dollars for failing to route 911 calls during a cellular outage. The outage occurred on December 21, 2022, killing calls to Verizon's Voice over LTE (VoLTE) operations in six southeastern states for an hour and 44 minutes. During that …

If the fine was a billion dollars, I'm sure those words would be true.

So does adding criminal liabilities for C-level staff if it happens again

I wish they'd said what the names were, this belongs in textbooks.

I mean, we joke that naming things is hard - and it often is - but it's useful to have a nice clear example of why it's important, and why it's worth the extra effort to get it right.

I've got a few files scattered around my file system whose names are prefixed with things like "Temp.." and "Bin after 2021..." and "Scratch...". I'm sure that professional devs wouldn't take this sort of approach to config management.......would they?

Of course not. Professional developers use 8.3 names.

I'm pretty sure this is not a joke.

It's well-known there are two difficult problems in computing: naming things, cache eviction, and off-by-one errors.

Less than an hour's profit fine for an outage lasting almost two hours even with recurrence aggravation... this is not even a slap, it's just an operation tax!

Probably the FCC are limited by statue in the fine they can levy in a case like this. But I agree, let's change that. All revenue (not profit) for the period of the outage seems like a place to start.
