back to article HPE intros virtualization solution it says is totally not targeting grumpy VMware customers

AI may be the focus of most of the announcements at HPE's Discover gabfest this year – because it's 2024 – but the Silicon Valley veteran has also taken the opportunity to challenge VMware by Broadcom with a virtualization offering of its own. That offering involves open source Ubuntu Kernel-based virtual machines (KVMs) …

    Waiting with baited breath

I have seen a *lot* of commenting on Broadcom's licensing changes, some even called it 'doing a Shkreli' (although the changes are quite *that* eyewatering - yet) so it's quite possible that HPE finds an open door at many places if they're not too greedy themselves.

Provided they offer (a) reasonable prices and (b) a clean migration path they might end up forcing Broadcom to the table in a lot of places, and with trust eroded in the company I suspect a lot of customers will walk anyway. People who run a lot of VMs have a business to run, and not being able to trust a vendor with pricing is not going to help.

Only Oracle gets away with that..

    "This isn't us being opportunistic,"

If so they were being remarkably short-sighted.

    KVM not in prod

Deploying KVM on its own is not a good idea. You need infra automations, xen-based hypervisor with enterprise support, networking.

If corporations hadn't taken VMware for granted and pumped funding into Xen and KVM and open vswitch and similar virtualization technologies we wouldn't be in this mess.
