back to article FBI encourages LockBit victims to step right up for free decryption keys

LockBit victims who are still trying to clean up their encrypted files are in luck: the FBI has a big set of decryption keys it would love to let you try.  The FBI, UK's National Crime Agency, and other international partners dismantled the operations of notorious ransomware gang LockBit this past February. Russia seems happy to be seen as a criminal state

It’s a pity but Russia seems to be criminal from the lowest crooks stealing from the west to the Kremlin stealing from the country. Criminality seems to be an honoured national trait rather than to be avoided

And in the USA, politicians are criticising the prosecution of trump, and recently in Pennsylvania, GOP politicians booed and hissed at 2 Jan 6th police officers who were being honoured.

And before that, in typical British style, the UK government was prepared to "break the law in a small and specific way".

      And as for Israel...

But those issues are distractions. The original point is sound, that Russia is governed by a small gang of people who stole an entire country when the Soviet Union collapsed, and with crooks in charge the rule of law simply collapsed.

Arguably China's going the same way.

I wasn't disagreeing with the original post, or indeed, playing "whataboutism"

My post was meant more along the lines of "everyone seems to be doing it, we're doomed"

    Periodic table of cybercrime

    Hi, heard about this one.

Essentially in order to beat the criminals you have to learn to think like them.

In this case the best way to do this is to create a "Periodic Table" with symbols and locations

on this table denoting the type and mechanism.

So there would be a frauds column, a hacks column, etc with subsets of things like social engineering

    attacks, physical compromises, etc.

It is an interesting concept and may generate some useful discussion as well as allowing folks to

quickly identify something threatening and devise a sensible response.
